I may have the opportunity of taking a position as Safety adviser at a large COMAH chemical manufacturing site, I have seven years experience of H&S within this industry of which the last two have been in a full time adviser/trainee adviser type roll. I am Tech IOSH & currently half way through the NEBOSH Diploma course.

The job description is in line with the roll & function of health & safety advisers as set out in HSG65, with a few additional responsibilities such as management of finances & budget for the department.

I will shortly have the opportunity to discuss & negotiate the salary for this position but would appreciate the opinion of people who have worked in this sector longer than myself, as to what I should realistically be asking for. I have looked through SHP & noted that salaries for this type of position range from the low end £21/22K up to £35K+.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Hi James,

I think the simple (if unwelcome answer) is it depends:

Many employers want to give a percentage pay rise on top of your current salary - so it may depend on your current salary (although you don't have to disclose it).

Your health and safety qualifications may have a bearing - higher grade/qualification, the higher the salary?

Will you be the sole full time safety person or will you be part of a team - only safety professional, higher the salary?

What level of qualifications / expertise have you got - are you a chemical engineer or a safety 'generalist'?

What level within the organisation will you be reporting to - the more senior you appear within the company, the higher the salary might be.

Will you be expected to maintain the existing system or will you be improving, developing, making the place fantastic ??

I'm sure there are lots of other things that can be taken into consideration.

I don't think I've helped much, and I'm sure others will be able to quote salaries, but you may be able to put forward your strengths as part of the salary negotiation.

James,

I contacted IOSH at head office a few years ago in an efort to find out what I was worth as self employed advisor MIOSH, RSP. They put me in touch with an employment expert who opened my eyes as to what I should be charging. I increased my fees, lost a few clients but gained some new ones. I now do less work for more income. Try that route and let us know how you get on.

As a consultant, I charge 2000 euros per day. If I worked 200 days per year (not really possible) I would get 400 000 euros per year. £300 OOO ? It did happen one year. Normally I count on an average of half that.

I think IOSH is reckoning that an employed/salaried H&S person will average about £30 000 per year.

Tech/IOSH ? not yet CMIOSH ? $20 to £25 K seems about right. Good luck

Merv
