I am seeking advice/guidance on potential career paths to follow. I graduated from Notts Uni with BSC (Hons) Degree in Environmental Health in 1999, ive been an EHO in a local authority initially enforcing Environmental Protection/Quality but moved over to Health & Safety Enforcement 4 years ago. Ive just found out i passed NEBOSH DIP2 first time (which im v happy about) and am now considering what my options are.

I feel i have a wide knowledge of environmental & H&S Legislation as ive had to enforce it, but would really like to use this within a specific industry and become more specialised. Any advice on how to go about this would be gratefully accepted. Thanks

Paul,

It would help if you could give an indication as to which industry sector you world like to get involved in, your posting does not make this clear.

Thats half the problem, I havent got any real preferences at the moment and I havent had much experience in such industries as construction / chemical etc as being a Local Authority Officer-im responsible mainly for the retail/distribution sector.

I appreciate that a change may involve re-training and am willing to do this but the obvious main problem is which one and how do i get the experience to find out whether thats what i want to do?

Hi Paul,

Ok, with your background you could check out the Waste Industry, a bl**dy dangerous place, worse than construction I believe. As someone relatively new to the sector myself, and having just finalised a recruitment situation, I can tell you there is a shortage in this sector. A quick search for waste management and recruitment agency on Google should put you in the right place to start a career change.

Good luck, look forward to meeting you at some Conference on Waste in the near future!"

Dear Paul,

How is your search for a new direction progressing? As an ex-EHO your skill set would fit well in the retail / hospitality sector.

Not bad thanks Jason, I've had a few people giving me a range of helpful advice which has been much appreciated. I am currently updating my CV and will decide whether to target a specific sector / industry or try a range.
regards
Paul
