Posted By Simon R Does anyone have some advice on the following:
I have been asked to provide some H&S guidance to a canal trust on a voluntary basis - like a lot of charities no-one gets paid. I carry out this role professionally as an employee of a company which covers me for the work I do for them; in this case, however, I would be working in my own capacity.
Am I better off getting them to pay for my PI insurance or asking them to indemnify me against any claims should the worst case scenario arise.
Having looked at the work involved and both my and their requirements, we both feel that I am a competent person with experience of both the activities involved and of the environment in which they will be taking place.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Posted By Martyn Hendrie You are probably correct in considering the matter of PI insurance however I suspect that if this is a one off job the cost may be prohibitive.
One other thing to consider is that PI insurance works in a different way to say car insurance as the policy has to be in place at the time the claim is made not just when the advice is given.
Consultants have to consider having a "run down" period where they hold insurance even after they have ceased active trading.

Posted By Martyn Hendrie It may be worth discussing it with the charity as they may be able to indemnify you through their insurances

Posted By Simon R Thank you, Martyn
I made a quick phone call following your first post and it may in fact be possible for me to have cover provided through the IWA - an avenue I will be chasing up.
Thank you for pointing out the need for a 'wind down period' after ceasing any relationship with the Trust - something I will certainly be bearing in mind!
Regards
Simon
