just testing the water for my wife....

she has 20+ years experience in the nhs as a accident and emergency nurse. She is a registered rgn and currently working as an emergency nurse practitioner. Over the years the NHS has changed and she has become disillusioned with the management, general public, violence, insults, lack of appreciation etc etc.....
She is currently studying for a degree level qual through work but doesnt know where it will lead. She has expressed an interest in H+S and I have suggested that she should try the NEBOSH cert to see how she gets on (which I think she would breeze through), then do the diploma.
Has anyone any other advice I could pass on to her?

and........more important...

Is there a market out there for experienced A+E nurses with H+S qualifications?

any help would be appreciated...many thanks in advance.....

Hi Holmezy and Mrs Holmezy.

There's a market out there for all sorts of people to career change and diversify.

We employ an ex nurse who came to us in 1998 as a new graduate from Nottingham Trent Uni.

Regards, Peter

I would suggest choosing a manual handling qualification. lots of Trusts are looking for manual handling trainers with clinical experience. The NEBOSH Cert would be a good supporting qualification.

Good luck

Has she considered taking an occupational health qualification (rather than nursing qualification) and then moving into that field? - in my experience there does seem to be a shortage of good OHNs.

Hi I was an A&E and trauma intensive care nurse for 13 years and I worked as an Occ Health nurse for 6 months, I too decided on a change of career but wasn't sure what to do so I studied for a degree in Life Science (Applied Biology)part time while working. Once I had graduated I decided to enter the health and safety profession. I initially looked at Manual Handling trainer/coordinator jobs and trainee Health and safety adviser jobs but was not successful applying for the former and could not afford the salary drop for the latter. I also applied to the HSE to be a trainee inspector, although I was advised by the H&S advisor at the hospital I worked at not to enter H&S from the enforcement side. Anyway that was 11 years ago and I have been at the HSE since. I studied for a post graduate diploma in H&S in the HSE as part of my training there. I am no longer registered as a nurse.
However I missed the patient care, team work and emergency response aspects of emergency nursing for quite some time.
Your experience as a nurse is extemely valuable as a H&S professional in that you have seen the results of accidents first hand (and can relate that to others with conviction)and can communicate/empathise with all levels of people.
My advice would be either to do the NEBOSH certificate or take the OHN (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) route. I think that your skills and experience would be eminately marketable.
