Hi All,

After 12+ years in Administration and Sales, I am venturing into the world of H&S.

I am in the process of obtaining my NEBOSH General Certificate and will then hopefully go on to study for the Diploma. I am conscientious, well organised, can communiate with internal and external customers, and I think more importantly have the drive and determination to make a success within H&S.

However, I have looked on various recruitment websites for positions and can only find jobs which require 2-3 years experience.

How do I obtain the experience without the benefit of being offered the opportunity to gain such experience ???

I would be looking for a junior role where I can gain valuable experience and grow within a company. Do these roles even exist!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Julie

Glad to hear that you are looking to change career and have identified that your previous experience will be an asset.

Are you able to carry out H&S duties with your current employer (under a competent person, either internally/externally)?

You could try the yellow pages, offering your sales / admin services free (e.g. 1 month)to independant consultants in return for accompanying them on contracts, inspections, audits etc.

There are junior (hate that word) positions out there, but they are few and fair between, look at the industry magazines (SHP, HSW, Safety Management) in the vacancies sections. All 3 of these are subscription based, but you can get a feel from the respective web sites.

Contact your local HSE office and ask if you could shadow an inspector for a week or two (fantastic insight to different industries and the role of the HSE) explaining that you are looking at a career change, they may be delighted to show you around.

Final - do not give up, even when everything seems to be going to the wall, percevere, you will need it when dealing with people that take H&S lightly and you are trying to demonstrate that the method they are employing could be improved.

All the best for the future and welcome to the wonderful world of H&S.
