The value of a diploma? Will it do it for me?

Posted By jonr I have the Nebosh certificate (with distinction) I have three years experience (within a fire service setting) of risk assessments, safety audits etc plus fire risk assessments, and management experience. I am 50 and want to enter the health and safety field proper. I am considering doing the national diploma(over 1 year).Should this combination result in doors opening for me? There appear to be many forum users who have difficulty in gaining employment, which is a bit worrying. (Giving up a well paid college teaching job to do this).Any opinions on whether the diploma is a significant factor? I am a new user and would appreciate any comments or feedback. Thanks

Posted By Richard Stewart Jon, As with any career change the first step is always the hardest... there is work out that for people with limited expereince however you need to be flexible as to location, the further north you go the more difficult it is to find work. Personally I would be looking for jobs now, get a job and then do a Diploma in the evenings Richard

Posted By Paul Leadbetter You may be in a better position than many of those who are finding it difficult to get their first job in H & S as you have some experience already and are hoping to achieve the Diploma to prove you have the higher level knowledge. Many younger people are, it seems to me, hoping that getting the Diploma will open doors for them but a Diplomate without experience would probably not be competent(assuming that competence is the appropriate mix of knowledge, skills and experience).
Good luck
Paul

Posted By jonr Thank you to those who have responded so far, either via the forum or directly by email. I appreciate all comments. I note that the ratio between views and responses for most threads is between 100:1 and 200:1 which is quite low.To clarify, I have 28 years fire service experience, (although not as a fire safety specialist) I am a Grad IFE and have a lot of underpinning knowledge and experience. I am based near Doncaster and opportunities do seem to be rare.
