I am thinking of emigrating to the USA (Florida) and was wondering if anyone has any info or advice on this? I am just doing my NEBOSH Gen Cert, but have three years H&S experience through my role as Safety Rep. Are there many opportunities for H & S out there, even willing to accept junior roles if this will get me into the business.

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Hi Might be worth having a look at the OSHA site at http://www.osha.gov/Also, I think there is an American Society of Safety Engineers you could talk with. The legislation is obviously different, normally more prescriptive and the labour laws are more heavily linked in via workers compensation cover. Regards Ian

Hi Des.
It is very difficult to emigrate to the USA, you either need immediate relatives who are already there, or need to start a business employing Americans, or be sponsored by an employer who can't get suitable American labour, or have unique skills (pop star, brain surgeon) or be on a list of sectors where they are short of skilled people.
Failing that you can apply for the yearly Green Card lottery, but as the name suggests that is a long shot, and the last time I checked they wern't even accepting English entries as we have exceeded our quota of people to have emigrated there in recent times. They were accepting Irish entries though.

Posted By David Raymond Hi Des, I recent met with a business that can arrange what they called an "e" visa for the USA, who maybe able to help you. Basically it seems that they employ you on their books, apply for a visa so that you can work in the USA and then when you find work in the USA they sort out all of your tax and insurances to meet the US requirements. The link is www.thealbanygroup.com not sure if it will help or not. Otherwise you will have to apply for a H1B visa for which the UK only gets a certain quota per year, and this quota is already used up for 2007. The next quota for 2008 is available in April 2007. Posted By Paul Wheeler Hi Des, I agree with what everyone else has told you. I was fortunate to move to Florida in 1999 through a Company transfer. The visa I had was only good for the Company I was working for. Which meant there was no opportunity to move on to another position once I was here. However, I was able to apply for a Green Card later and now have the freedom to work where I want. Since 9/11 things have gotten so might tighter with regards to immigration and the issue of visas. ASSE have positions posted on their web site and you might also try www.BritishFlorida.com as they have some useful immigration contacts. FYI Recent years of bad hurricanes has made Florida an expensive place to live. My house insurance annual premium is $3500 and my car insurance $1200. I am sure you will eventually find a way to get work here.
