I served as an engineering technician in the Royal Navy for 14 years- an organisation which prides itself on its extremely high standards of safety management- I was Engineering Department Health and Safety Representative responsible for ensuring that all activities carried out onboard by ships company and contractors were carried out safely following laid down procedures which were documented and accountable. I was responsible for the Ships Health and Safety Policy, Safety Management Systems and for compiling and auditing risk assessments, COSHH assessments, safe working procedures, management of the permit to work system, active monitoring and regular reporting to senior management. I also successfully completed an NVQ D32/D33 assessors course and have experience as an instructor.
I worked as a life support technician in Saudi Arabia and set up a safe system of work to ensure that equipment being worked on was isolated and could not be worked on or accidentally operated- this was introduced to the workplace following a series of toolbox talks and was implemented successfully. I was also responsible for all COSHH and risk assessments.
As a BP employee I understand that safety is our number one priority- if it is not safe we do not do it! As a field based engineer I am responsible for the safe working of BP personnel on customer sites providing safe working procedures, risk assessments and COSHH assessments where required. As a duty of care to my customers I am also responsible for informing them of any hazards or risks identified during my time at their premises. This is done through written and oral communication with recommended actions and timescales for rectification. Often this has to be communicated at all levels from shop floor to board room and as such I am an effective communicator at all levels. An example of this was a recent presentation on the risks associated with use of solvents and how to reduce exposure and prevent occupational dermatitis carried out by me at a customer site involving packing operatives, team leaders and production managers as well as the site HSE Officer.
Outside of work I am a parent governor of a local infant school and form part of the Health & Safety Sub Committee. As such I am currently reviewing the schools Health and Safety Policy and Management Systems to ensure they are relevant, current and understood and as part of this I am responsible for producing risk, COSHH and safe working assessments and regularly carry out safety audits to identify hazards with recommendations for rectification.
I am looking for an opportunity to follow a career in HSE following my recent successful completion of the NEBOSH General Certificate. I would welcome any offers or advice on hw to break into this area.
I am available immediately.
Leon Ball.

Hi Leon,
I noticed a job that may be of interest to you the other day. It was based in Staffs. You would'nt be the same Leon Ball from HMS Sultan, say around 1988 ish.
