Hi all,

I have been looking at doing some H&S courses but I am really confused after speaking to a couple of course providers.

They have told me that the NEBOSH General Certificate is the equivalent to an A level and the Diploma (environmental) is the same as a honours degree.

Surely this cannot be right is it?

An A level in 3 weeks, and a honours degree in what 6 months??

I am a firm believer in the saying if something is easy to achieve then is it worth having, does this apply to NEBOSH?

Sorry to maybe offend anyone who has already done these courses, but I dont know so I thought the best place to ask is on here.

Advice or clarification would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

The three weeks is intense and usually there is a gap between the first 2 and the third for self study etc, it is not that straight forward either if you are not familiar with H&S.

I never did the NEBOSH Diploma (personally the Gen Cert put me right off NEBOSH but it was a pre req for uni), I did an alternative IOSH accredited course at uni over 2 years(check the training and courses link of the left -).

It may only take a short amount of time but it's only easy if you put a lot of your own time into it

(you should post it in the general forum).

Hiya,

I'm not too sure where the Certificate stands in relation to other qualifications but I'm sure that most contributors to this Forum will agree that it is the foundation stone for H$S Professionals.

Is it difficult? How long is a piece of string? Many factors involved in that question I'm afraid.

Go on line to NEBOSH and have a look at the syllabus, then make your mind up.

Jim

I am wondering was it the content that you found difficult or the format for exminations

The Nebosh General Certificate is a level 3 qualification on the QCA framework. This is considered the same level as an 'A' level. The NEBOSH Diploma is level 6 on the QCA framework this is degree level. However, the NEBOSH Diploma is not the equivalent of a degree as the breadth of study is not to the same extent. The term equivalence is used incorrectly quite frequently I'm afraid which is why confusion arises. I think the depth of study required to obtain a NEBOSH Diploma is often not recognised by potential candidates as the jump from an 'A' level to a degree in approximately 6 weeks of teaching time ( although including assignment work it is actually longer than this)is considerable. The NEBOSH Diploma is a good qualification for people who already have the academic skills to complete a qualification at this level but anyone looking to undertake a higher level H$S qualification needs to consider whether they have these academic skills already as it is unlikely that there will be time during the programme to develop these, although many providers do try to assist.
It is worth looking at some of the longer programmes offered by the universities where there is time to develop the skills to deliver as well as the health and safety knowledge if you do not feel comfortable at this level. Alternatively the NVQ qualifications allow you to develop at your own speed with the assistance of an assessor.
The range of qualifications now available allow people to select the best method for their own style of study.
The NEBOSH Certificate is still the most common form of entry to the profession but their are other alternatives available. Look on the 'about membership' section of this website for further information.

personally I obtained my diploma when it was old style and modular. The recommended time scale for this was five years I e one module per academic year. It was certainly no soft option and no course work in sight. In reality I completed the course in 8 months but only because I read and studied other modules outside of modules being taught. I am pleased that there are now alternatives to the old regime and it infuriates me when employers and sceptics show disregard for the effort and time needed to obtain this qualification.

ouch just fell of of my soap box

gham,

Was so long ago I wrote the answers on parchment!

I have to say it was however the best move I made, as it kicked off my current (third!)career.

Well you guys can't be that old or you would be reminiscing of chipping away at your stone tablet with a chisel.

I was asking because I like you Jim have many qualifications and found i was more pre occupied with answer style for the gen cert than any other exam and I have never had to use all of the alloted exam time before and indeed since.

Jill an A level in a year at a couuple of hours a week and take of 12 weeks for holiday
3 X 40 = 120 hours

NNGC 8 hours a day for 3 weeks and an assignment to do as well

8x5 = 40 x 3 = 120

not that different and a subject you may have no knowledge about either
