Is there any specific course which you need to do to carry out DSE training and assessments?

Or would the information you learn in the General Certificate allow you to carry out these functions?

After all it's not really rocket science is it, correct seating, glare, position of eqpt etc, common sense really.

Hope I have not offended anyone by been too flippant.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It depends on the standards of evidence you (and your employer) expect in your workplace.

To the extent that you are satisfied to be cross-examined in court on the basis of a 'common-sense' understanding of your statutory responsibility, that's fine.

As long as you understand that a competent claimant will commission a report from a registered ergonomist or someone else with scientific understanding of your responsibilities to prevent injury, as far as reasonably practicable. And that even the world's experts don't claim to prevent all injuries to users of DSE.

So rather than train to be an ergonomist and specialise in this area, is it practical for someone with the NEBOSH general certificate to carry out DSE training and assessments?

No need to 'train to be an ergonomist'; enough to learn the basics.

The course by Duncan Abbot at EnricoSmog is useful. And the books of Stephen Pheasant 'Bodyspace' (the 2006 issue is jointly written with Christine Hammond) and'Ergonomics, Work and Health' provide a very good working knowledge.

The simple answer to your question is yes.

NEBOSH Certificate and the relevant guidance would be more than sufficient.

Of course you would need special expertise for unusual set-ups or people with disabilities etc. but you could do the majority without a problem.

Kind regards

Nick,

Thank you very much Nick, that is the answer I have been trying to find out.

I have seen a job advertised for a h&s assistant which would be ideal for me as a newly qualified certificate holder (jul 06).

They require a Cert holder to carry out DSE trg and assessments within a large organisation, responsible to the h&s officer.

An update,

I have went for it Nick and have an interview arranged for Monday of next week (30th).

Not too sure what to expect as this is the job advert;

Due to reorganisation of records, our client seeks to employ an experience Health & Safety Assistant to conduct Training and Individual Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessments for all staff in the proper use of VDU equipment.
The post holder will be responsible to the Health & Safety Officer.
The base location for the post has not yet been confirmed but the post holder will be required to attend all of our clients’ offices and other locations throughout Northern Ireland.
The post holder will be required to undergo security vetting.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
A NEBOSH Certificate
A minimum of 12 months experience of carrying out Display Screen Equipment Training and Assessments.

Any advice anyone can give in order that I can prepare fully for the interview would be helpful.

I am now off to read the DSE regs.

Hi John,

I have previously carried out DSE Assessments fora major international company head office in London 2000 employees, I attended the British Safety COuncil DSE Assessment Level 2 course which was very informative but just re-iterated the things I had learnt from my NEBOSH general certificate.

If you require I could forward on an example of a DSE assessment for you to review.

Regards
Karel
