Hello all,

I have an interview for an H&S advisor position on Monday. I have my IOSH managing safely and I take my NEBOSH Gen exams in the next few weeks. The company is aware that I have not yet passed, but they are willing to see me. This obviously means that my CV and subsequent phone calls have done the trick.

I am comfortable with interview techniques and how to present myself etc, but I would like suggestions/ recommendations on what probing questions I should ask and what type of questions that they will ask me.

The position is for a chilled food manufacturer, covering the factory and offices, reporting to the H&S manager.

Any help would be very much appreciated, what better place to ask than the oracle itself?

Regards,

Col

I would suggest that you have a look at the HSE website - food manufacturing industry.

This will give you the areas which HSE consider to be priorities in the food industry, and you will probably find that they are indeed the main issues within this company.

Also look-up the 'recipe for success' initiative.

Be prepared to be asked about the main priorities.

If they don't ask you, ask them - talk about the main priorities and ask what they have been doing to address them.

It will show that you've done a bit of research and understand some of the problems associated with the food industry.

If they don't say, ask why the vacancy? Previous person walked? Promoted? Sacked? New role? Why?

A great question is straight - "are you under any prohibition or improvement notices?" and "what is your relationship with HSE like?".

I once failed to ask these questions and walked into a job where

- they were under an HSE prohibition notice
- they were under an HSE improvement notice
- HSE inspector was (rightly) paying close attention
- I was first their ever safety professional
- I had no office, desk or chair!

Great challenge it was too.

Find out as much as possible about the company - it will help in 2 ways. Firstly, you can 'spin' your answers to suit what the company does, and where/how they do it. Secondly, it may throw up some questions you want to raise.

Good luck

Some good advice given and as I do not know anything about food safety I will advise the following:

be yourself and most of all be honest;

research about the company e.g. web site;

Good luck

Cheers for that fellas. Unfortunately I didn’t get the job, the first impression that I got from the interviewer was that she already had someone lined up from within, this proved to be correct. She actually went over the head of HR and made the appointment to someone from the shop floor who had zero H&S experience. Apparently (and this is from someone who works there) the person appointed is a good friend of hers.

I sat my NEBOSH Gen exams in December and I am quite sure that I have done more than enough to pass, I may have even done enough for a distinction, role on February 27th for the results.

The advise posted on this thread has come in handy for another position that I am interested in, this one is for an H&S co-ordinator for a bakery. From following the tips on here I have found that they have been served with 6 improvement notices over a 4 month period so I would guess that they have never had a dedicated H&S person on site as the notices were for Manual Handling, no RA’s for certain roles, PUWER and as you would imagine, dust.

So are there any specific bakery safety questions I should be looking at asking, or anything not covered within this thread?

Once again thanks for your help, and have a great & safe new year.

Regards,

Col

I asked about improvement notices and the companies relationship with the HSE. There was the potential for a prosecution. I was never advised what the outcome was, and I was responsible for Health and Safety! When I turned up on my first day, I was given a pencil, sharpner, ruler and a pen. Nothing else!!! It was the organisation from hell. We are talking post 2000. If you find yourself in that situation, you need to be developing an exit strategy.

All the best.
