Good Evening,
I have just been accepted as an Affiliate to IOSH following my recent General Certificate pass.
I have been working in the role of a Service dept. Co-ordinator for a company that specialises in Material Handling and suspended window eaccess equipment; since my work involved time carrying out various H&S duties ( you can guess what they must be Working at Heights, etc), I decided to undertake the NEBOSH Certificate. I found this really enjoyable and learnt a great deal.
I was coming back to work from college and started to change the way we did things based on what I had learnt in the evenings.
Now I have hit a brick wall. The problem I face is that I wish to pursue a career that is soley based on H&S. H&S takes up about 40% of my time at the moment and I need advice as to what direction would be best for me. I am 37 years old, ex forces and a qualified sparky with a lot of tool time but not much hands on H&S. I hve seen jobs advertised but they all seem to want a minimum of 5 years experience.
Whats the best type of job to go for?
I would appreciate any advice going?

I was in your position about 2 months ago but i applied for a job who wanted 2 years experience (which i hadn't got) and i got the job. Ok i'm not enjoying it and i am looking for some thing else but i'm just saying stick with and just apply for the jobs. The worst they can say is no!
The thing with the General Cert is that it is very general! I feel i need to specialise in some thing to get further.
Keep looking on the net for jobs but i sent a letter & Cv out to loads of companies who i'd like to work for. i.e for you i'd approach electrical suppliers. It is best if you know a bit about the industry you go into! Trust me i've just gone into the food industry and i have to read nearly every day to find out what i should be happening!

Thanks for the advice. I am looking around and at the same time trying to influence the bosses in my company, to change their attitude towards H&S.
I am looking at Electrical/construction based jobs.

Hi David,
Just wanted to add a couple here. Since you are into Electrical and Construction, you might want to consider more specialised courses to give you more bargaining power. Some areas like PAT, scaffolds, Cranes to name a few. Try the relevant bodies for some accredited courses. I am sure any employer will think twice in rejecting your application over experience.
