Recently I have received my new level of Tech IOSH after completing the NEBOSH exams, and have always worked in the construction industry,

I am actually a Building Surveyor and have also completed the BOHS P402 Bulk Sampling and Surveys, Asbestos course.

I am looking at other opportunities within H&S and construction, or possibly Asbestos consultancy, but I am not convinced that as I am only just entering the specialised side of the industry, the money will be on par with my current salary.
I have looked at many opportunities abroad, which are offering better salaries, but they just aren't for me.

Has anyone else been in the same situation, or anyone have any advice on where I should go from here?

All advice is welcomed with open arms

JPK

JPK,

The P402- is certainly a very worthwhile course to have under your belt. Where are you based mate?

Check the usual- Yellow Pages- try ringing a few Co.s-I did my Nebosh Gen 2002, (completing my NVQ L4 now) thewn this what what I did 4 years ago, and I am now the H&S Manager for this medium sized Construction Co.

It did take a wee while though but it was worth it in the end. Although your wage as a Building Surveyor would be no miss.

Thanks for the response.

I'm based in London/Herts, but I am willing to travel as the work I do now is very widespead.

The thing I am finding recently is that my work in knowledge of Building surveying is extremely useful for Health & Safety.
We have always used a consultants, but after recent meetings with them I have noticed that unless you have vast construction experience, it an be very difficult to understand the money side of the industry.

At the moment I am operations manager, but with H&S qualifications and the P402, I am doing alot of other peoples jobs aswell as my own.

The company I work for is a small/medium sized contruction company, but I am sure that I would be very useful to a larger organisation doing Asbestos Surveys and H&S inspections of sites, or for smaller companies maybe even just part-time or freelance, whilst continuing with my existing role.

Do you know if there is much call for this??

To be honest JPK, I am based in NI, and over here there is a hell of a lot of work for someone with your qualifications. Most do I have to say operate on their own.

But in London, I would say there some of the larger types of Asbestos Removal Co.s would definitley consider you as an advantage to have.

The only draw back about flying solo- the insurance is pretty steep from what I have been hearing.

I can appreciate you having to take on other peoples roles. I came on board here as purely H&S but as the years progress, there are more and more wee bits being added onto my workload.

But definitely give the Y. Pages a look to see how many co.s you are seeking operating in your area.

Thanks all!!

Lee Mac, Ian and all who have responded, although many posts were removed before I had a chance to read them!

As yet I havent found something that offers the type of work that will allow me to keep up with a CPD in H&S, Asbestos and Construction, which I am actually quite amazed at to be honest!

Doesnt anyone need an internal Asbestos Surveyor, qualified in H&S, Asbestos and 9+ Years in construction!?

WOW i'm amazed!

Hi JPK,

We are looking for a planning supervisor in the beds/herts/bucks area.Would this be of interest to you? Asbestos tends to be a stand alone specialism these days due to the high PI & insurance costs, so I'm not sure whether you will find many jobs where you can keep all of your specialisms up to date. Let me know if you are interested. I assume that this discussion forum lets you respond to me (Its the first time I've used it).

regards

I am looking for safety cover on a site in Birmingham City Centre. It is for 2 weeks minimum starting 21st April and possibly a week or more after. The site is already set up and method statements and risk assessments approved. It is a good site with pleasant surroundings and a office available for administrative purposes.

I am in urgent need of cover as I have another site I need to go to and my partner is taking a holiday break. This could lead to further opportunities as we already have several companies enquiring after our services. We also look for weekend cover, night cover all periodically.

This would be a great opportunity for you to gain experience and join our network of professionals. If you are not interested or know of someone who would please respond to:email
spencert@blackberry.orange.co.uk or Spencer on 07932073578
