I have recently self funded that National Gen Cert (diploma) and am a current RoES in a manufacturing facilty looking to move into H&S full time.

All potential agencies and employers are looking for more qualifications and experience.

If I go to the expense of self funding the Diploma in the new year, would this be enough to get me my first H&S job or will my lack of experience still hold me back.

Any advice would be appreciated

Trevor,

A much asked question, chicken and egg scenario.

To be brutally honest with you and giving you the benefit of my experiences I would say it is extremely difficult (although not impossible) to gain experience once qualified unless working in a H&S role.

What you must do is obtain as much experience through your ROES functions as you can, become involved in risk assessments, inspections, investigations and policy making.

I was in a similar position to yourself around 5 years ago but I am now qualified and in a full time H&S role.

I am not trying to put you off but be prepared for some setbacks along the way.

If I can be any further help if you click on my user name above in blue it will give you my email.

Hi Trevor.

The easiest would be to gain more experience at your present place of employment. Could you not put a case for your existing H&S person needing assistance or cover for holidays, or offering to help with risk and COSHH assessments under the supervision of the H&S manager with a view to gaining more experience. This is the route that I took.

Good luck, Stephen.
