Posted By geoff0078 I have recently gained my full diploma and Grad IOSH status. I have work in health and safety for 5 years within a scientific research organistaion linked to government. I looking to set up my only consultancy firm. Part -time to start with to determine customer base, as I am currently very happy within current role and looking for a varied challenging environment. COuld anyone give some guidance on how to start up/setup you own consultancy and the type of insurance I would require?

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Geoff You will need professional indemnity insurance and, possibly, cover for public liability; don't forget to tell your motor insurer (assuming that you will be using a car for your new business) as business use is not covered by social, domestic and leisure use. Get yourself a good accountant and get busy. When I started my own consultancy, I was able to go on some free courses on marketing, tax and VAT, etc . run by my local Business Link so it would be worth you checking to see what is available in your area. Posted By Paul Leadbetter Geoff The premium will depend on many things (offering asbestos or environmental advice will put the premium up, for example) so all you can do is talk to some insurers or brokers. Some on this forum use Sennet or Oval; I use Norwich Union Online. Paul
