Posted By malc saunders Colin, I live in Dubai and the advice i can give you is to do your homework first. Look at web sites for renting property here, its not cheap. If you are bringing a family, look as school fees, does the company pay or do you have to pay yourself like so many people here. Most companies do an "all in" package where you rent a property, buy your own car etc. Utilities are not cheap, electric bills can be horrendous during the summer (air-conditioning). The traffic as awful, forget Paris or Rome or the M25, they are nothing compared to here. Why am i here? For our retirement home in Cornwall with a boat, new car, no financial worries at all, MONEY! The money you earn is obviously tax free so it goes into your pocket and not to the immigration department, sorry i meant government! Its still a vibrant place, great weather from September to May. I am looking for a safety prfessional if you are still interested after all that, drop me a line.

Posted By malc saunders Frank, Please do. I dont wish to put anybody off Dubai but let me tell you about my day today: 0700hrs at The Palm (the one where Beckham and Owen have bought villas, why i don't know because they are all built by Stevie wonder!) for a site visit and discussions about a difficult scaffolding job we have to do in Abu Dhabi. 0800hrs the labour camp to talk with camp doctor about a labourer with bleeding hemorrhoids and one guy with a swollen testicle! (I am not making this up believe me!)Also inspected the accommodation and found the kitchen has more cockroaches (again) than we have labourers (3,000 by the way). 0930hrs at our other company workshops etc, one guy lost four fingers on a woodworking machine the other day... 1400hrs at the Burj!! The Burj will be the tallest building in the world when its finished, we have the interior fit out for the whole building, we will have around 2500 people working on it and its keeping me awake at night!! In Dubai, when they have a fire, they really know how to have a fire!! And that's what worries me about this job, so this is where i am looking for a man manager more than a heavily qualified safety practitioner. I need somebody who can control so many different nationalities on one site, where the politics are unbelievable, the Project Director refuses to talk to the Project Manager! 1600hrs, back in the office, paperwork, paperwork...our Arabic and Asian brothers love paper!! More bureaucratic than the CITB!! Plus its 42 degrees today...BUT, job satisfaction is through the roof, love the place, the job, love the people....anybody still interested?
