I have been employed for the last six years as the HSE Manager for a company which operates general purpose research vessels which, in addition to oceanographic science, have undertaken contracted survey work for the oil and gas industry.

I have an MSc in Occupational & Environmental Health and Safety Management with specialist knowledge and experience in the application of health and safety legislation within the academic research and marine sectors. I hold Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health Professionals (MIOSH), and am involved in their Continuing Professional Develop (CPD) cycle. I am a member of The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) who represents offshore, marine and underwater engineering contractors.

I represent my company's interests at corporate level, addressing global health and safety issues across a broad spectrum of scientific, academic and commercial industries. In this role I am fully involved in the development of top level health and safety policies and procedures for the UK Government’s Scientific Research Councils.

My role requires me to be fully conversant with both marine and shoreside HSE legislation, and demands the ability to quickly and accurately interpret and apply the same. I am an ISO 9001/2000 Lead Auditor, ISM Safety Auditor and am fully involved in the development, management and auditing of the company’s Documented Management System. I also have experience with the ISO 14001 & ISO 18000 standards.

My role requires me to develop and present a wide range of operational and safety focused training courses and I have specialist training in this area.

I am also the Marine Operations Manager for my company and manage a team responsible for all communications, logistics and travel arrangements for our vessels. I cover the marine interests for all oceanographic research cruises, from conception to completion. Each multi-million pound research cruise is project managed as a single entity within the entirety of the annual programme. I manage all vessel port calls, agent liaison and operational planning, including emergency and contingency planning and exercises.

My safety, quality and operational background provides me with the ability to work quickly and effectively in a high-pressure and logistically challenging environment. Due to the international nature of my work I have the ability to relate easily to a wide variety of personalities and professional levels.
