Posted By SHUK I have been with my current employer for over 10 years, most of which involved a Health and Safety role. Now it is a full time position and has been for over 5 of those years. It is evident I have "progressed as far as i can" within this company in the role of Health & Safety, this is not due to my performance or competence but the lack of opportunity for progression, the H&S manager is in situ for ever. I am sure this situation relates to many Health & Safety professionals out there employed in a large Companies, downside of "blue chip" companies? So do 'real' opportunities exist out there? I am employed as the HSE Adviser in a diverse Company, managing health and safety issues in various projects ranging from facilities (offices, warehouses etc), Aerospace, Construction to Leisure. Overseeing a number of sites throughout the UK and Overseas, therefore interpreting, developing polices and processes and implementing varying H&S regulations for the host country, ensuring best practice wherever possible. I posses a number of Occupational Health and Safety qualifications, Diplomas, NEBOSH Certificate etc.... and i am currently working towards my Charter membership for IOSH, currently Graduate membership on the IPD programme. Also a qualified auditor, and recently gained accreditation of OHSAS 18001 for the Companies Safety Management System. I will gamely work anywhere (UK / Overseas) if the package is suitable. I do not wish to rabbit on all day about my credibility or personal competencies, after all self praise is no praise at all, so if this posting has sparked any interest please respond and I will gladly provide more details. Regards

Posted By Glyn Atkinson I lost a very able assistant to the deadman's shoes syndrome - I kept finding the poison he was leaving !! All I would say is that a good firm will know what the situation is and enhance your qualifications for their ongoing use, but knowing that if the "job" comes along that you would have to move on! My guy has been promoted up to safety manager in his own right for another local company, but he had been looking for over a year for the right job role to come along, and hopefully my reference helped - what more can you do in those circumstances - you can't hold a good chap back !

Posted By Ian G Hutchings SHUK Have you considered a move into consultancy? I am amazed because there always seems to be plenty of jobs in the S&HP and you do have experience and qualifications. Is it that there doesn't appear to be the opportunities, or are you applying and finding it hard to get interviews and/or offers? All the best Ian
