Has anyone ever successfully made the transition from union safety rep into a paid position?

I currently hold the TUC stage 3 certificate, and I'm in the process of applying for my tech IOSH status. I've held the position as safety rep in a civil service department for five years, although I'm now itching to spread my wings a bit. The only problem is the cost of further training, which won't be funded, even in part, by my current employer.

I would be willing to take an assistant role, or a role that includes health & safety duties of some type, although they appear to be few and far between! So if anyone has any advice on how they made the transition, I would be very interested to hear.

Thanks.

Stew.

Hi Stew,

my advice is to keep at it and you will get that job you so desperately want. Many Union Reps, myself included have successfully gained employment in Health and safety after and some times before completing the TUC Cert in Occupational Health and Safety.

Do join IOSH and use this forum on a daily basis.

Do keep applying for jobs.

Taylor your CV to reflect your Health and Safety experiences.

Offer your services free to companies in order to gain some further experience and useful contacts.

Once a member of IOSH, attend as many meetings as possible and network network network.

Enquire about the TUC Tutor Training course, it is another great course to go on, and if there are any other courses on offer grab them.

Apart from that good luck.

I went from non union safety rep to my present chartered status in 8 years.

- if you want it, then go for it, and keep at it until the first job comes along.

Then it is a case of gaining as much experience within that job.

It may be a pure starting role, but your foot is on that safety ladder, and that's what counts !

Go for it !

Yes, I made the transition from Safety Rep to CMIOSH.

The TUC courses are good grounding in OSH, however I would suggest going down the other routes of qualification in order to land a position.

Buddy up with your Safety manager at work and get involved in everything you can, be seen as a doer not a preventer.

Determination and desire will get you that job.

Good Luck ITK

Hello Stew,
I made the transition from rep to manager via NEBOSH Cert, TUC Cert & IT qualifications etc.
Before my current position I struggled for a few years until I 'forgot' to put on forms my TU involvement. I then got a couple of interviews (maybe coincidendal!!).
My big break came when there was a change of senior management at my then company and they took me on the HS team.
It is not easy especially when the workers think you are a turncoat and the middle managers are suspicious of you.
None the less I believe that I now making a real difference on sites and that I have made the right decision.
Best wishes.
