You do not explain what health and safety knowledge you have at present or your qualifications are, but clearly being a nurse has some advantages. Assuming your knowledge is limited I would suggest gaining some basic qualification first and then going for the MSc.
Good luck.

Use the experience you have in healthcare.Employers want experience. I have been in OHS for 8 years and have made a few mistakes along the way but you learn from them. I think you should either go for more generally based qualification (NEBOSH etc) or specialise in healthcare. Check out this link. Loughborough do MSc in healthcare risk management. This may solve your problem.

Jay,
I have to agree with the last post, experience is essential.
If you are working for an NHS trust contact the quality, safety or risk manager/ advisor and tell them you would like to get more involved in this area.
Contact the occupational health department as well.
The trust should have a safety committee as well.
Contact the union reps some of which shoudl have done some safety inspections etc.
This would enable you to get some hands on experience of safety, you will need this when you are doing your Msc
a few years ago,I worked for an NHS trust, as a safety manager and would have happily helped out anyone with an interest in the subject.
All the best
Paul

I'm going to disagree with the other posters to some extent.
15 years ago I did an Msc in occ health & safety with no experience in health and safety. In fact I had almost no work experience at all having just completed an engineering degree. I have worked in health & safety ever since. Getting that first break can be hard but not impossible. Obviously pick up any experience you can along the way but it isn't the be all and end all of getting a job.

You only have to look at previous posts by highly qualified highly experieced people that receive little or no response to see how difficult it is to get a foothold in this field.
The easiest way to get some experience is to get yourself appointed as a safety rep and then go on the courses your union offers.
The TUC also run lots of free courses so it could be worth exploring this avenue first.
