Posted By Wayne Harris Jason, Hopefully the following will help you; 1. In general the requirements for working as a health and safety manager for a contractor in Dubai is a recognised health and safety qualification at a minimum level of NVQ3 or NEBOSH Certificate. 2. For Senior Health and Safety Management roles most companies now require at least NVQ4, BSC or NEBOSH Diploma level. 3. If working in the freezone area, which includes most of the worlds largest development projects in Dubai, then you will also need to attend a local free of charge 2 day health and safety course in order to become a registered safety advisor. (The term registered safety advisor appplies to all health and safety job titles) On a personal point of view Dubai has to be the best location in the world right now for any health and safety professional to work. If you need any further info please email me. Wayne

Posted By malc saunders Hi Jason, I came here in 1999 with a NEBOSH Certificate! And rose to Groups Safety manager within one of the largest civils contractors in the UAE, i left three years later still only with the Certificate...Its a question of what your visa says, if you apply for a reasonably senior position, you must submit your degree for verification....if however like most safety professionals (well the ones that i know) do not have a degree, myself included, you will be designated as a security officer on your visa...which means diddly squat really.... Your certificates have to be: a. Duly signed by a UK based solicitor = 20 pounds per certificate. b. Apostilled by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office = 19 pounds per certificate. c. Attested by the UAE Embassy, guess what = 20 pounds per certificate...plus it takes quite a while to get them all verified... By the way would somebody tell me what apostilled means? I agree with previous respondent that it is a great place to be for H and S, especially when the newspapers are running articles like in today's papers....

Posted By GT Wayne, Interesting comments would you like to elaborate on you views. The reason I ask is that I am told and read in magazines and newspapers that Dubai is a building site engaging 50% of the crane population. Temperatures are high for 8 months of the year. Schooling access for children has a 12 month registration time, housing is through the roof and utilities are they cheap?. A game of golf is pricey OOPs! and I haven't mentioned the ski slope - health care I have no information on it. Maybe there are some good bits there, like a job offer that compensates for all this ? I am available, well could be to the right offer! GT

Posted By malc saunders GT, for your info: Temperatures are only high for 4 months of the year...and its not the temperature you need to worry about, its the humidity around July and August..September to May/June its terrific.. It is a building site, but if it wasn't we wouldn't be here! Schools i don't know about but my neighbours don't seem to have an issue with their two sons. They knew before they came here that they would have to pay for schooling...Dubai is all about your negotiation skills!! I negotiated to have the whole contents of my house in the UK shipped to Dubai and the company agreed to pay for it.... Golf ruins a nice walk! The ski slope facility is fantastic, especially for beginners...excellent, and they are building an even bigger one! Why? because they can! It is UAE law that you are given healthcare, my company provides a good facility for me and wife... I have said this before on this forum, Dubai is dusty, noisy, the traffic is awful, its very frustrating at times ( i think i have just described Birmingham!), however, it's vibrant..where else can you ski indoors in the morning, sun bathe on Jumeirah beach in the afternoon and go a desert safari on the evening? The food is fantastic, the beaches are amazing, the hotels are incredible....BUT, its not everbody's cup of earl grey! I know some guys that came here on a Sunday and went home again on the Monday! Go figure!
