Hello Everyone,

Firstly let me apologise for repeating a thread that has probably been written a thousand times before!

I graduated in 2003 with a law degree, did some casual, part time safety work where i developed a taste for it and then spent 2 and a half years as the Assistant Ops Manager for a large outside catering firm. I tried to take on an HSE role here and tailor my existing job role around some of the safety requirements for the company. I then did the NEBOSH general certificate in the hope that it would lead to a full time safety role elsewhere. I left in February in order to pursue this goal - I had advanced about as far as I could at this company and felt a little too comfortable and so hoped this would galvanise me into action. I have since been temping and have applied for countless safety jobs but not with much luck.

I feel I have a strong CV, but find myself in that all too familiar situation where employers demand that little bit more experience and are unwilling to take a chance.

I would be eternally grateful if anybody had any advice, CV pointers or best of all job offers! I am based in the Midlands and would take any safety role at the moment, even if it was a couple of days a week, just to get more experience. I am very aware that the longer I am away from a safety related position the less attractive I will be to prospective employers.

Thank you for taking the time to read my tale of woe! Any comments would be gratefully appreciated.

Martin

Employers that take a chance on people are few and far between, however most of us have been lucky at some point where an employer gave us a chance to get on the ladder.

I can see the rationale behind it, if you were an employer wanting to pay £20K plus for a Health and Safety Officer would you take someone with experience over a rookie, I know I would.

Keep plugging away, one day someone will give you that break.

ITK.

So you are up against needing experience before people will pay a decent (ish) wack. What I did was go and work for a charity who couldn't afford alot but needed someone deperately. It wasn't forever and was tough but it ended up giving me brilliant experience and then I could go (and get) that better job- comes down to a (yet) more personal investment to get experience but alot of Employers will see that as an advantage and thus you'll end up ahead of much of the competition (who may have drifted into the experience without as much effort/cost)!
Good luck though I am not suggesting it is easy...
