I will soon be made redundant from my job by around Christmas time. I have had discussions with careers advisors as to what types of jobs are available around. One that came up was working on oil rigs. From what I can understand I will first need to pass a medical, followed by a survival course(BOSIET) and then followed on by that by a 5 day greenhands course. To my advantage all funding will be paid for me. 3 people from where I am currently due to finish have already gone through this process(I cant get in touch with them). One question that niggles me is age...I am 47 in October. I have had no physical problems ever and consider myself fit. I served for 13 years with the armed forces . Would 47 go against me in the wider field....even if , thinking positively , all courses were completed and passed.
Thanks in advance, David

Get a NEBOSH cert aswell and dont let your age be any type of barrier in fact maturity could well be an asset.

Age had better not go against you, that sort of thing is verboten these days by virtue of The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006! Although I haven't checked that it applies to off-shore sites!

Actually it is one career that age surprisingly will work in your favour. Age=experience.

unfortunately the deciding factors re the rigs [and everything else] is experience as no experience usually = no chance of a job irrespective of your passing the survival tests etc
As in all things the people at the 'sharp end' would probably have no probs with age but you have to get past HR etc first and without doubt there is age discrimination
Evaluate your experience and skills and look for all types of work not just rig work - HGV drivers are still needed
