I have a second interview with a large company as a Health and Safety Advisor. The company business is mainly, wholesale but as smaller companies operate under their name it covers other areas, such as printing, retail, service stations etc.
My background is as follows, 3 years experience as a Safety Rep in a manufacturing environment. I put myself through the NEBOSH Cert in 2005. For the last year I have been working as a Trainee Safety Officer in a harbour / port environment. Has anybody any good advice for my 2nd interview. ? I will also on the day have to undertake a practical exercise. Has anybody got any ideas of what this might be or how best to prepare for it. It is a very attractive position and I am eager to be successful.

Some companies use Psychometric testing as a way of fitting the person to the job.

I would assume it would be a 'scenario' with other candidates which you all, as a team, have to evaluate, decide on a plan and then put safe workable management principles in place. So looking for a leader with good practical based, comms skills, evaluation skills and a team player.

Don't try and second guess just turn up and be yourself, or ask them what it may entail as this shows initiative and forward planning.

Research what types of goods are being sold and transported and go through any safety aspects, particularly with deliveries to petrol stations.

Driver safety, their training and licence requirements and competency for manual handling and unloading if using forklift trucks on sites?

The practical will be done on your own not in a group. I researched all about the company and the different safety aspects to the products that they brought in and transported by road for the first interview. I'm just really wondering is there anything else that I can do to prepare. Anything I'm missing out. I have heard of people being asked to demonstrate how they would teach how to carry out a risk assessment to a difficult audience before for a pratical.

Firstly, you've done well to get the second interview. The company have obviously been impressed with you so far.

I would echo the advice from the other respondants and also say that at the second interview they will be looking to see that you would 'fit' with the company.

Place a lot of emphasis on your approach to the job, both during the interview and the practical exercise. If you come over as enthusiastic and with a positive, problem solving attitude this will impress the interviewers. Try and have some examples of how you have achieved things in your current position. Particularly how you have worked hard in 'selling' the benefits of good health and safety practices.

Do some research on the company and have a view on what the various safety challenges are likely to be within the day to day activities.

Your posting has a keen and enthusiastic vein to it and if you take that into the interview you will be on the right track.

Good luck.

Just an update - might be of benefit to others. The practical element of the interview was to inspect a warehouse and come back and report to two hazards that you had identified.
