Hi there,
I completed my NEBOSH General Certificate successfully and am now going to be starting the NEBOSH Diploma from January 2008. Since completing the Certificate, I have undertaken a few unpaid work experience roles as I have great difficulty in gaining a Health and Safety job. I paid for the Certificate myself and will also be paying for the Diploma. I have a Catch 22 situation as I am looking for a junior role to get into however how am I meant to gain experience if no one gives me this opportunity???!!! I currently work part time for an insurance company but there isn't an opportunity for me to get involved with Health and Safety. If I do not get a Health and Safety job before I start the Diploma then I will be looking for work experience. I have spoken with numerous people and am waiting for responses to gain work experience. The only problem is that I won't be able to do work experience for probably more than two weeks. I would really appreciate it if some one could offer me help/advice.......
Thanks!!!

Is the diploma 1 day a week? or a block course? I dont think there is much point in doing H&S work experience for 2 weeks. Why cant you do it for longer?

Hi Im going to be doing the 1 day a week course. I've spoken to several people who work for big companies and they will be inquiring about me doing work experience. However they have informed that they don't think I will be able to do it for a long period of time. Essentially I would like to do Work experience throughout my full year of doing the NEBOSH course. I was planning on attending the one day course, spend two/three days doing work experience and then the final day/days doing revision. This way I have a balance of all three and I can get support through my work experience.

I can see where your coming from, I was in a similar situation not so long back, I passed my nebosh cert in 2001 and there was no interest what so ever from employers, the company I worked for at the time and I work for now had a union so I went on union courses and became a union rep, from there I started working with the H&S manager doing tool box talks, inspections, risk assessments, h&S committee meetings etc of which I kept all evidence of this to prove my involvement. It was 2005 when I got the position of health and safety officer since then I've just finished my nvq 4 (awaiting to be assessed). I can see no benefit in doing your Dip without at least a year's experience............
Keep on trying and best of luck..

This has been asked before- it is indeed a catch 22 situation.
I "got round it" by biting the bullet and finding a local charity who needed the help. It looks good on your CV- that you're not paid (or not much) may either be irrelevant/not realised by Recruiters or even a plus point ("showing initiative", "not doing it for the money"...)
You may struggle to "get in" to a paid job particularly if you've only got a short period of time available (see the trouble someone had on here when they offered themselves for free a few weeks back)
The best of luck- look at it as an investment if you can...

Hi FJ,
As soon as I finished the Certificate last year I did work experience at the British Red Cross. I dealt with the general Health and Safety for one of their buildings for 1 day a week. As there wasn't alot to do, I also helped out with their general admin. At the same time I was doing working with the Guys and St Thomas's Health and Safety Advisor for the Trust. This was worthwhile as I did go with him to audit different departments. Unfortunately I could only go when he was able to take me along as they there were confidential issues..etc. Both of these jobs were voluntary unpaid jobs. Since completing both of these, I got a 5 month paid job working within the Occupational Health department for an Absence Management Company. This role was admin and the job role wasn't exactly what I wanted but they dealt with accidents at work and I got the opportunity to work with Senior Health Care nurses therefore I gained valuable experience. They couldn't offer me a permanent contract due to internal reasons/low work load.. therefore I finished full time work in the end of July. Now I am back to looking for either a job or work experience!!

HI
NOT SURE IF THIS WOULD HELP FOR YOU BUT IF YOU ARE A UNION MEMBER SPEAK TO OUR FULL TIME OFFICIAL AND GET INTO A HEALTH AND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE JOB.YOU WILL HAVE FREEDOM OF INSPECTIONS AND INVESTIGATION IN YOUR WORKPLACE WHEN YOU WANT AND UNION SAFETY TRAINING IS FREE.ITS A VERY GOOD START. I`VE DONE IT FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND ARE NOW AWAITING RESULTS FOR MY NEBOSH GEN CERT WRITTEN IN SEPT 07.I`VE ALREADY GOT 3 INTERVIEWS LINED UP.
HOPE THIS HELPS
