Posted By Paul Graham How worth while is this? I am already CMIOSH with a MSc in Safety Management and have recently undertaken the 5 day Site Manager's course (from which I learned very little). Is the NEBOSH Construction worth while?

Posted By DP Paul - do you work in construction? How much construction was covered in your MSc? First couple of questions to ask. I don't work in construction but I took it for self development and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the course and meeting people from another sector. so personally for me yes it was very much worthwhile. For you it depends on your reasons. DP

Posted By Paul Graham Thanks for your response, I've worked in construction (CDM and consultancy) for nearly five years, however my background is not in construction, nor is my undergraduate degree.

Posted By Stuart Cowie Paul, There is a growing trend within the larger construction companies to specify that potential candidates have both the 'general' and 'construction' certificates. However as a Chartered member of IOSH with a Masters I fear that you would not benefit by doing the course. Please contact me if you are ever looking for work as I have many clients within the construction industry who are looking for decent Safety Practitioners with experience who can do the job! Posted By Pete Sutton that depends on what field you want to work in... NEBOSH Construction is the industry standard for its field.. I was surprised by your comment on the SMSTS as i found the course to be informative and massively improved my knowledge of CDM and site protocol.. it must be the training provider/tutor who was the problem, as the guy who taught me was excellent.

Posted By Paul Graham I plan to continue to working in construction, however prior to undertaking the SMSTS I worked on a daily basis with the CDM Regulations and Construction (H, S W) Regs so was quite comfortable in their application. Must say the lecturer maybe wasn't the greatest but he covered the curriculum of the course.

Posted By I H I work in construction and never took the Cons cert nor the SMSTS course. You have CMIOSH so I see little point in the cons cert and would spend time and money on more specific training depending on your requirements and abilities. For myself, scaffolding inspection, excavations, lifting AP and temp works were the first courses I took after passing my diploma. After that just keep building up. What region are you in and what areas of construction are you looking to work in?

Posted By CFT I disagree; CMIOSH does not mean the individual has a clue about construction, especially pre IPD. Depending on your experience and overall knowledge you may not benefit, on the other hand you may indeed; I suspect you would not have asked if you felt 100% regarding construction related matters. Good course, enjoy if you decide to take it. CFT

Posted By Paul Graham I work in Scotland (Glasgow). At some stage would like to move into Safety Advisor / Manager role with a contractor. Just not sure how much they will expand upon the content of the SMSTS in the NEBOSH Construction.
