Can anyone advise me on what's the best way to get a break-through in this sector as a trainee/assistant to get their career up and running and what websites and recruiters to target?
Thanks
Tony

Well i'm 19, and completed my NEBOSH Certificate in August with a Credit. After which i never contacted any agencies, only people i knew who had careers in health and safety, and contacted employers direct.
I had a job with a multinational oil company before i was even issued with my certificate.
Perhaps i was just extremely lucky, but i know the NEBOSH Certificate will make a big difference, presuming you don't have it.

My preference when recruiting is for someone with practical experience within the sector who is interested in OHS, rather than someone with qualifications but no experience. For example, someone who has worked as a process operator or an electrician who studied safety while working "on the shop floor" would usually be better placed to understand the issues etc. Even better is the worker who also volunteered to be trained as a manual handling trainer, first aider, member of the emergency response team etc. and who was a safety rep. Demonstrating an interest in and experience of the practical application of safety on the job stands a person in very good stead when applying for jobs as a safety practitioner.
Not sure what your circumstances are, but if you can combine study with work experience in the sector you are interested in (manufacturing, offices, chemicals etc.) then you will be more likely to be invited for interview.
