I just been contacted about a position in Abu Dhabi...i been to dubai and Bahrain and turned down jobs there but want feedback on AB DAB???
Any ex-pats there care to offer some guidance on living, school shopping etc...

I have been in the Middle East for over 29 years now and things are changing rapidly. Like you I have worked for many years in Bahrain and Dubai. Lots and lots of safety jobs on offer, most of them in the construction industry with some oil/gas in Abu Dhabi, Saudi and lots in Qatar. The wages are on the increase in the Middle East as they cannot get people BUT the cost of housing is terrible. You should get a housing allowance (if housing not supplied free of charge) but in most cases it will not come near what you have to pay. Speaking to lots of people at the resent IOSH conference in Dubai and the main complaint was cost of housing and school fees.
Make sure you find out cost of housing and rent allowance first

EG.

What should somebody expect to be paid as an accommodation allowance?

I would suggest you check the UAE newspapers such as www.khaleejtimes.com or one of the reputable estate agents such as www.propertyshopdubai.com . There are lots of estate agents in Dubai and ADout there to give you a feel for costs involved. Bewarned they are not cheap. It really depends where you want to stay. Location/location/location. Also you may want to think about Ajman or RAK (assuming you work in Dubai or Sharjah) as they are a bit cheaper but you will have to travel and that can be something else.
Re the allowance for housing. Each company is different and you will have to do a bit of negotiation. The chances are in a lot of cases the allowance will not cover the cost of rental and you might have to put some of your wages towards this.
There again a lot of expats purchase thier own property but that is something else and there are many websites in dubai dedicated for that.

schools starting from 10,000 dirhams a year for kg and you can add 2,000 for each further grade.
home rents starts from 50,000 for studio, 70-90 for one bedroom and 120,000 dirhams and up for 2 bedrooms
