Posted By Paul Hello I am looking for advice on how my construction qualifications and expierence will be of benefit to me in seeking work in the health and safety field. Firstly, I have only just downloaded my application for membership of iosh, and have been following the discussion forum regularly, to which I have seen much discussion on affilate membership, and use of such membership by persons in the area of safety and health. The information I would hope that you could help me with is in the following, I have completed a diploma with the Institute of commerical managment(u.k) named workplace risk managment. I have also completed a diploma with University college cork(Ire) named safety health & welfare in construction. There are also a number of cscs courses I have particapated in with more to follow. I have been invoved in the construction industry for 17 years. I am currently a Foreman with a major house building company in Ireland. I would appreciate any advice on what international/Dubai employers are specificaly looking and do my Irish qualifications hold merit internationaly and with iosh Hope to hear from you Regards Paul

Posted By Lynette Rispoli Hi Paul it sounds like you are heading in the right direction by obtaining on the job training as well as relevant H&S courses. I would assume that your next step would be working towards becoming a Chartered member of IOSH. If you look on the development pages you will be able to see what courses etc you will need to take to achieve this. If you are looking for a job in the uk, then please contact me. Good luck Lynette

Posted By willhiem Paul, I know there was a thread on this a few weeks ago, well by 'on this' i mean working in dubai etc. i wouldnt know much about that side of things. i do know that if you have 17 years experience in the construction industry and have a formal qualifications such as your diplomas then you would have plenty of knowledge of construction related safety and the issues. The whole becoming a member of IOSh takes a while, its all explained fairly well in the membership section, the only thing i suppose for you to look up is if your course in cork was iosh accredited, i know a lot of new courses are'nt, but are in the process of being, if it is then you can attain grad status. Anyway that probably wasnt much help, but being honest its possibly one gripe i have with IOSH is its very UK centred, understandable since the majority of members are from there and probably dont want to comment because they feel they may not know the legislation etc here (pretty much identical though), and i suppose not wanting to give out ill informed advise. I just suppose these discussion boards are'nt as helpful to Irish members as a quick Q and A resource as they are for UK members. Granted it is always interesting and informative reading the responses etc for your own future reference. (I dont mean anything bad by the above comment, its just an observation, i dont want to get into a whole UK v Irish members (IOSH Ireland has their own webpage just no boards)) Anyway i'm goin way off topic there, but i do hope you get some decent help on this. Dont know why you're going to Dubai, besides the fact you'll get sunburnt like hell and way more freakles!! there are plenty of health and safety jobs about here despite the bit of a slow down. anyway best of luck with it.

Posted By Paul Hello again I wish to thank willhiem for posting his response, yes I found no notice boards on iosh eire would you be able to tell me if cscs training is approved by iosh and you gain credits for such qualifications. As you said on your reply there is no real difference between Irish and English Health and safety practises. I would just like to know are the cscs cards recognized as the citb ones are here. Maryt I have tried to phone the number you posted but I am getting invalid number I have tried numerous times my phone number for work between the hours of 8.00 and 17.00 you will find me the number 00353(0)868364792. Thank you also to Lynette will be sending you email during the week. In closing I would hope that members of IOSH working in the middle east may find this thread and forward me any information on working in the MIDDLE EAST namely Dubai/UAE Regards Paul

Posted By willhiem dont know it CSCS are accepted in the UK, the equivalent is accepted here, well it was in certain cases (there are a million different loop holes now through the whole fas safe pass scheme, not necessarily the cscs but I’d imagine they are, though training here is much longer since the beginning of the year so that may have a knock on effect somewhere) As far as I’m aware on site safety management is similar in dubai (though maybe not as strict in terms of equipment as most of our old cranes are being sand blasted painted and shipped out there, so I’m told!) I suppose the question is are you planning on joining or have you joined IOSH at some membership level, I know a lot of people are asking for that now in certain jobs, I myself don’t think it’s the be all and end all, and am still not CMIOSH, I think there are far more important questions to answer when applying for jobs, so I don’t l know where this trend came from but I don’t think they’d be majorly hung up on it in dubai, though it probably depends on where there person you’re applying to is from and how influenmced they are by following trends going on here in Ireland and the UK.
