Hi there,first thanks for your time reading this,as yet another careers advice question-i have worked in construction,and also in the rail sector where i was a COSS (controller of site safety) handsig and lookout also a possession planner,I have passed my IOSH working safely and am now to begin my NEBOSH Gen Cert.I want to make H&S my career,any advice please and chances of getting a trainee job or foot in the door,im 48 yrs old,live in Kent and willing to learn.

Marc, I wont pretend it will be easy for you to find a position with the IOSH managing and NEBOSH Certificate.
Majority of jobs in OSH want diploma level qualifications and or Chartered Membership of IOSH, (which requires 2 years experience) even those do not guarantee a job.
I would suggest you join IOSH as an affiliate member which will get you into your local branch meetings where you can network, also you will receive the monthly magazine SHP where 99% of H&S jobs are advertised.
SHP will allow you to benchmark your qualifications against what employers are asking.

SHP is the best place for jobs ( or a good agent ).
I was suprised recently when I looked through the jobs vacant adds in my local paper. A couple of small organisations looking for health and safety help but obviously not wanting to shell out for a CMIOSH.
Might also be worth ringing the local job agencies - they sometimes get requests to find safety people but don't tend to have enough business to warrant an add in SHP.

I have thought about going back to the rail industry yes,on the H&S side,but as i have been away for two years it seems to be hard getting a foot in the door unless i have the required cert.To be honest i would make the teas and coffees if it meant getting a job in H&S lol

Hi Mark,i was in the same situation as you. I was safety rep for many years and was made redundant at aged 46. Went back to school-Nebosh Nat cert, IOSH man Safeley etc,etc.Registered on every agency on the net and constantly every week sent my VC to all and any companies in the Midlands.Finally got the break from visiting the IOSH exhibition at NEC from handing out my CV to all consultants and alike.I have been self employed since that day and now working to CMIOSH.So dont give up

Thank you for your words,im 48 so in the same boat really,just going back to school,im self funding and having to do the course distance learning,as have to work,downside is it will take longer to learn,and not interacting with people,so harder maybe?we will see.lol.Glad you made it though,gives me hope,have a nice day,marc.
