Posted By David Bannister I am considering whether to accept an invitation to tender for safety inspections of construction sites. Whilst I know the theory it is an not area in which I have previously worked. This would be high volume/low fee but provide regular and frequent work. Two questions: 1) To colleagues who do this type of work, can you offer any insights in to the pros & cons? 2) very cheeky this: can anyone offer me a template that they have found to be useful? Thank you in anticipation.

Posted By Richard Altoft David, are you seriously suggesting that you are considering making an offer to someone to carry out construction site inspections for them to earn fees although you have no experience in that field. You say you know the theory - has that knowledge been tested in some way? You say you expect low fees but high volumes of work - no doubt if you are cheap enough some client will take you on. You also invite people you know nothing about to send you tips and templates since presumably you have doubts about your own abilities in this respect. That seems a risky strategy. I sincerely hope, if only out of respect for all those construction workers who deserve professional support that is fully conversant with all the hazards and all the difficulties (and tricks) in the construction industry that you do not get into something like this until you have significantly strengthened and tested out your experience perhaps by working alongside others who are experienced in construction safety. Are you a member of IOSH and do you have access to more experienced construction H&S pros?????????????? R

Posted By David Bannister Just to clarify: I have both sufficient qualifications and experience to undertake the work although my original post did not make that clear. Apologies to anyone who was misled. Thanks to those who have provided off-line advice and thanks to Hazel for your advice.

Posted By Michael Reid Hi David, I am a site safety representative in the construction industry in Scotland. (Completed my IOSH Level 3 last year.) If you visit the HSE website you will find down-loadable inspection information freely available. HSE also have manuals available to download specifically for construction sites. You will also need to understand the new CDM 2007 regulations, again info available to download on the HSE or CITB websites. Another useful website is worksmart.co.uk Not sure if this is usable quality in your position, but would give you a good idea of what to look for etc

Posted By I H Good luck, as an individual consultant in construction I like to see people trying to get into the industry from other areas. However if you are unsure don't blag it, you'll find people will suss you very quickly. Stick to safety principles and most of all, you will need contacts. Still after ten years I found myself completely out of my depth this morning and had to phone a friend! HSE guidance is ok, but the CIP blue book and the GE700 are useful refernces depending on the complexity of the jobs. CDM you just have to learn. My experince is no two jobs are ever the same, whats your exit plan if you tender, win it and then find thats it really not your forte?
