Posted By philip john I have the general certificate and fire certificate and I'm currently on Unit B of diploma level 6. I want to break into construction, I may be taking the construction certificate next week. My question is, will obtaining this construction certificate make it easier for me to break into the construction industry (I have very little experience in this sector, apart from leaving school and working in construction for 18 months (18-20 years ago)) or am I destined to struggle to break in to this sector because no experience means lots more training is needed to be at a competent level in this industry. PS I was told not to bother to take the construction certificate because of the fact I'm on the diploma. Please give truthful answers as it may sway my decision in funding another course myself for very little return (ALL COURSES HAVE BEEN FUNDED BY MYSELF (NO HELP))

Posted By Dav Philip If i was looking for someone it would be the lack of experience rather than the qualification that would be the biggest barrier. However, character of the person would be one of the biggest factors for me. I have met people who have had no formal qualifications or experience safety wise in construction but because they have excellent people and organisational skills and a drive to suceed they have been a success at their job. A NEBOSH cert can be obtained in a few weeks, the other things i mentioned are not so easy to obtain. I have also met people who have all the qualifications under the sun but were not 'competent' to do their job as they had no idea how to deal with people. Should you bother with the construction cert if you have already started the diploma? I personally probably wouldnt and thats nothing to do with the fact that doing both at the same time sounds like a very difficult ask to me. However, if you had two candidates that were exactly the same in everything else and one had it and one didnt the one with it would get the job.

Posted By Lloyd Cole A great qualification to gain, but you will need experience in construction to progress. I have just finished 2 X £150 m projects, and was still learning. The biggest hurdle is your workforce, if you can man manage, gain the respect from knowledge, teach and involve the trades in educating safety and health amongst the staff and understand the difficulties of construction. If you can do this, then go for it. If you hesitate on this then step back for a while, and re think.

Posted By PL I've 10 years H & S Experience (DipSHEM and GradIOSH), a further 10 years man management experience (with a good rep) and am currently looking to get into Construction H & S. I keep getting knocked back from both companies and agencies because I haven't got the construction cert. I'm just about to take this too and will let you know if it makes a difference.

Posted By philip john Thank you all for responding to my question. I have made my mind up this morning as I've enrolled on the construction certificate this morning at NEWI in Wrexham, it starts on Wednesday, (only need to take hazards exam and practical exam as certificate covers law side). so Diploma should not suffer too much (I hope) If it doesn't help with my career in construction its still worth having this additional qualification for health & safety. Thanks everyone Phil
