Posted By MikeP I have a General Certificate but no practical experience in safety. As most jobs are asking for experience I feel i have no chance of getting anywhere fast. Anyone interested in offering me employment to gain experience in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, or South Yorkshire areas I would be gald to hear from them

Posted By Sally Don't let the fact you have no experience put you off applying for jobs. First H&S job I had asked for 3 years experience I had none - got it anyway. I didn't have all the requirements for the other three jobs I've had either. If you like the sound of a job and think you can do it apply.

Posted By Anthony Edwards Mike, I believe you will have some experience in the safety Field it is just a matter of trying to relate previous job experiences into 'safety speak', that is unless you are a 16 year old school leaver. Regards Nutty

Posted By John P W Mike Nutty is right. I am sure if you look at your previous work experience and 'safety-fy' it you will have probably got experience in: Working to and following safe systems of work. Hazard identification. Reporting near misses and unsafe conditions. If you had any supervisory responsibilities you may also: Have carried out safety briefings. Investigated incidents and near misses. Implemented control measures and safe systems of work. What you may need to do is take a critical review of your CV give an overview of the actual role and then bullet out what your H&S responsibilities like above. That way someone will be able to identify that you have in fact got experience as a lot of people seem to think that passing a H&S qualification like the NGC is the start point for them in terms of experience. It is not. Hope this helps. John

Posted By Carl Starling Mike, Keep trying!! I got my NGC 12 months ago and applied for my first H&S job 6 months ago. Low and behold (and I agree, a might luckily from reading these forum posts) I got the first position as a H&S Officer that I applied for. 6 months on, all is going great. I'm proof that some people are willing to give you a break, so keep trying and keep applying!!! Focus on the positives you have to offer. Good luck! Carl.

Posted By Bry Thompson Mike, like Carl I got my NGC a year ago, and like you had a few frustrating months of rejection for not having enough experience. I went and registered with a few employment agencies. Then at last I was given a chance by a large company on a "nothing ventured nothing gained" temp agency contract. Now 10 months on the company that took the risk have employed me, are now are investing time and money in me. I have fantastic support and mentoring from my Health Safety and Environmental manager, and now i find myself working towards my diploma. Keep trying, keep your knowledge up to date and you will get your break. Don't forget we have all been "newbies" at some point. Hope all goes well

Posted By willhiem I was once like you are now, and yes i know its not easy, to be calm when you cant find work, but take your time, learn a lot, why think of everything you've learnt, for you will still be here tomorrow and a job may too! (sorry - saw max and paddy there lately and its stuck in my head!!) but its good advice! i was over 6 months trying to get my first job, without experience it is next to impossible, i'm grateful to my 1st boss for giving me the chance, once you have even a bit of experience it gets easier becasue even though you may know your stuff you can just use examples of where or what you've done! my best advice is to not try and compete with those with experience but to just tell the employer, look i know safety is all about experience and learning and thats why i'm here, i want to get on and learn and work my way up from the bottom. a little bit of ego massagin and humility goes a long way! i had 14 interviews til i got a job! and have offered jobs for 3 out of three interviews since, so dont loose heart!!
