Posted By Dani Hi all Im new to the board and would like to ask for some advice. I have decided to start a new career in health and safety after doing my NVQ's 1, 2 & 3 in Painting, Decorating and Construction. I would like to know where i should start qualification wise. Can i go and do the SMSTS 5 day course followed by the Nebosh General or construction Certificate? or is there another route. How long does it take to get the right qualifications? I imagine that is a needle in a haystack question but any help is appreciated xxx

Posted By CFT Dani Welcome to the IOSH forums. Your question whilst first appearing simple to respond to, does in fact warrant a fairly in-depth answer/s and not wishing to opt out of helping I can only speak generically here on the forum; there are many such posts that have been posted in recent years and you would be well advised to spend some time using the excellent search facility to read other threads and subsequent responses. If you are really certain you want to come into this profession, then you must remember (like many other trades) it is not restricted to what qualifications one possesses; core competency includes, qualifications, an overall understanding of a wide variety of areas and other professions, and of course (probably IMO) the most important, experience. Chicken and the egg argument not withstanding, this may well be the most difficult 'nut to crack' and if you are prepared to start in a position perhaps lower that whatever qualifications you may acquire, then you stand a chance. Yes, the Nebosh General (or Construction) certificate may well be the next step for you; it is, so frequently next best thing to impossible to say what is right for 'you' without a lot more information. Both courses are excellent in content and value if you shop around for a provider. If you have joined IOSH at an affiliate level then why not pop along to a branch meeting or three, get to know others and listen carefully to the advice that is forthcoming? Also look to see if your area has any other localised speciality group/s that may be worth attending; once you have a better understanding of what you need to do, you can make some decisions based upon the advice received; don't restrict it to one or two, speak to as many as you can; we are a friendly lot really, and don't mind the repetitive questions, so don't be worried about asking. If you are not a member of IOSH then I strongly urge you to consider joining, you will have access to SHP (a H&S magazine) advice, and support (among many other things). Take your time, don't rush, try to take an outside in look about that all important next move. All the best in your future career development. CFT

Posted By Amanda Dani The advice given by CFT is excellent and will go a long way to assisting you in making your mind up. I changed career path sometime ago and was given similar advice by an established H&S person, this advice has proven to be good for me. Good luck.
