My employer has suggested that I might be getting an assistant to help with some of the paperwork and provide general advice (a full job description is yet to be written).

My questions are as follows;

*What sort of qualification/experience should I be looking for in the new employee? Would the IOSH Managing Safely Cert. be enough to start with? The view is that the lucky candidate would then be put thru the NGC.

*Whats a good starting salary for someone at this entry level?

Any responses to the board please?

Hi DHM

Why don't you offer it as a work experience to a student at either a College or University studying Health and Safety. You can then develop a job description as you go.

Some vacancies seen are offering salaries for advisor in the region of £18-20k. Not sure what you would pay a work experience candidate.

We've just gone for the four year train from a blind start route -

Started someone at 17 years old as a junior safety administrator - database entries, paperwork filing, getting to know all of the mundane work first, learning what fits around the legal and safety paperwork within our systems.

Then at 19, progressing to technical clerk level, starting to ask for reports and assessments from our contractors and being trained in house on what to look for and chase up, reviewing simple COSHH data sheets after external training, keeping all personnel training records and recall up to date, start to book external training courses, be the person responsible for all site and contractor safety inductions and the recording of that training etc.

As the person progresses and becomes more and more familiar with our organisation and systems, then move on towards the Managing Safely courses, then NGC route to become the site junior advisor, with four years of on site experience in H&S documents and procedures already under the belt.

Salary to be upgraded upon each year's performance review.

After 4 years, it may well be that we employ another junior safety admin person to start all over again.

£18K to £20K with NEBOSH Cert, wouldnt bother with the Managing Safety.
