Posted By willhiem it should i think be noted that judging from the lack of response we are all to busy to reply. saving 100's of lives isnt an easy task. it starts roughly on a tuesday at 11am (4 day week is great)... no only kidding, there is no set day really every day brings something different than the one before, new contractors to deal with old ones still up to their bad ways so i guess its understanding whats happening on site and what will be happening and planning for that, and what to do. reviewing risk assessments and method statements as well as inductions is a big part of dealing with contractors, then also there is the updating and issuing of the various documentation, issuing permits, getting machinery / scaffold signed off / handed over. ensuring everything is going ok on site - PPE, signage etc is being worn and all operations have been planned / assessed and method statements done. reviewing and conducting audits, compulsory bitching about one thing or another, issuing bitchy letters or warning where needed and most annoying of all investigating accidents and doing up reports on same ('cause 99% are stupid and its now wasting your time having to investigate them). i'm sure i've left out loads but thats the general jist of it, some days are busier than otehr because on site stuff has to be done now, because if you wait the job wil be doen and you'll just have the same thing happening again down the line and there is always room for that stupid accident.

Posted By CFT Oh go on then Willhiem, just so your not the only one;-) Start 08.30 (ish) no two days the same, today was contractors here there and everywhere wanting to be in confined spaces, doing hot works, throw in some excavations, security issues [uninvited visitor during teh early hours which I awoke to the call from security at my home], TBT's, working at height issues to consider, a rotten SSOW submitted for a job next week (threw it out with information on what I really wanted to see) drove off with my hard hat on the roof[see hard hat in 1000 pieces]chaired a couple of meetings and tried to explain legal liabilities to a PC on a particular issue, then had morning tea! Back to my office and answered some emails, some sensible, others arduous and a waste of everyone's time, printed off a dozen SSOW for proposed works, made some calls and perused the IOSH forums for a few minutes. Lunch Round to my Daughters to fit a black out blind so wee one can get some sleep at night, had another cuppa and back to the office; message from Mrs CFT to pick up some products from teh local DIY store as I apparently have a few chores to do when I get in; check out IOSH forums again. Meeting with MD and three of the ivory tower on profit related subjects and how is the budget looking at the halfway point; much deliberation and a particularly good joke from the MD whilst returning from the rest room (posh word for loo) Meeting all done with, back outside to see why the entire network of street lights have stopped working and check on some contractors working on the overall site (not within CDM those ones) so they all seem to be fine and dandy and my man who has been certifying a couple of man safe system calls me on the moby to say he is done and can he have the PTW closed and signed off. Back to the office and it's now 1700 hours; I have some letters to write and a report for a meeting tomorrow (big brass are down, 2 hate each other so its referee hat on for a while) anyway, oh yes, report, where was I? Ahh I remember, finish this post ( I had some calls in between) tidy up desk and hopefully get done today by 18.30 and get to B&Q or whichever is closest. So that was my day today (all be it not over yet) No two are ever the same but they are similar, I never stop to think how often my competency comes into play; well, perhaps I do when I get stumped, when that happens its time to call in a specialist in that particular field, which reminds me I have two type 3 surveys to view by Friday to update the management registers! Sorry if it seemed samey and a bit dull, but it was what happened today! CFT

Posted By Homer If the day goes well and is without event it's pretty good, usually do some site visits, catch up on paperwork, write reports and always dedicate some time for research. The biggest section is the site visits, just getting out there, viewing and understanding the problems and giving sensible pro active advice, it's a winner every time. And the down side, if something happens. Stressed, taking the dogs abuse from Senior Management, including verbal intimidation and direct threats. (what difference does it make if you weren't there it's always the Safety Man/Womans fault). Then there's the lies and cover up I hate that bit even more especially when sometimes you are pressurised into becoming part of it.

Posted By CW 6.30 - Woke up in yet another hotel room, this time Bristol. Quick shower, bags packed and checked out by 7.00. Sticks in the postcode of where I'm heading into the old tom-tom and off I go. 'Turn right' says the ever increasingly annoying Jane. Eh, its a one way street and I can only turn left. Left I go and the route planner recalculates. 5 minutes later I am parking in the NCP. I'm here for yet another induction onto yet another site. I'm really early so I grab a drink and loiter about watching the hazards unfold in front of me. 7.45 I get a tap on the shoulder, its the induction guy, I don't know who is getting more bored of seeing one another, this will be at least his sixth time of induction me onto various sites. We have a natter for 15 minutes and finally go into the offices. He told me to sit in a certain chair so that he could process me first. 15 men in a room not really wanting to be in there. The atmosphere is light and the inductor takes great delight in using me as an example at every opportunity, all light hearted. Two eastern European lads start to snigger at the back of the room, they are told to be quiet and to pay attention or they would not be allowed on site. One of them says something in their mother tongue, quick as a flash the inductor replies in their language and puts them in their place, their faces were a picture. See you in the east end were his parting words to me, 'aye' I replied. Induction over and its to the turnstiles, surprise surprise my card doesn't work. I eventually get in and track down where our unit is going to be. 20 minutes later I have all the info I need for the CPP. Back to the NCP, £7.80 for 3 hours! Gutted, thank the lord for expenses, it still hurts to pay that much mind. Hit the road and stop an hour later for breakfast, also expensed. Have half an hour on the phone then back on the road. Pulls into my drive back in Leeds at 14.15, 10 minutes on the laptop adding my collected info and I'm done.
