Posted By Neil Duddy I am after some advice, I left the British Army 6 months ago after being an 'Engineering Surveyor' in the Royal Engineers for 5 years. I also attained the Nebosh National Construction Certificate 6 months ago. Since leaving the forces I have been working as a 'Site Engineer' for a Major UK Civil Engineering Company. I am also a Site Safety Engineer and must carry out a site safety inspection and report once a week. I have got a lot of on site construction experience from working in the UK and abroad, and have been engaged in H&S for 6 years. H&S has grown on me more and more and I wish to leave Site Engineering behind and find a dedicated H&S role. I plan to start my Diploma in August, but the question is do I continue working as a Site Engineer, or should I find a dedicated H&S role while studying the diploma? I am not after advice what I should do, but some personal experiences what you have done, or what you would recommend, this is to help me make up my mind. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Posted By Pete48 Neil, I did my safety study, albeit back in the days, whilst staying in my existing job as a production/process engineer. The additional effort and demands of both a new job and some pretty serious study felt just too much challenge for me. I found that my technical knowledge and understanding of basic concepts of safety as learnt/applied in an engineering context were priceless. I was also able to relate much of the study to my confident knowledge on the practicalities of life in my existing job, even some of the law module made sense! I transferred into full time safety a year or two later when an opportunity arose. My history of proven, practical implementation was a key factor in my success in gaining that transfer. I don't think life is that different today. So there you are, that's my experience. Good luck whatever you decide.

Posted By Kevin McAughrey Hi Neil, I left the forces a few years ago, I work offshore now, like yourself I was doing pretty much the same as you, for instance the job I did in the forces was what I was employed to do offshore. So I did my NEBOSH, and come September I will be starting the degree, still in the same job which is more Environmental than health and safety. But now I have good rapport with senior management because of my commitment, and the voluntary work I have done, which was put on my CPD. The Degree will take 3 years now to complete, during this I may start applying for full time roles with Oil and Gas, but will have to wait and see. At the moment I am over qualified for the position am in, but hey you need experience, and I can’t afford to go assistant to gain that, so will carry on as I am until am confident in my abilities to go that route, which in my industry is where the big bucks are. If possible could you take on H&S roles in the position your in i.e Safety Rep? Either Diploma or Degree’s are all good, and hopefully you got the enhanced learning credits to soften the financial burden. Best of luck. Kev
