Posted By Martin Jones Can anyone offer some advice ? I have worked for my present company for the past 21 years. I have filled various roles within the company including production management for 4 years. I then took the role as Production support co ordinator, which has now changed into safety advisor in every one eyes except my bosses. I played a major role in getting the company through to 5 star BSC rating including sword of honour. I cover every aspect of safety management in my job role. All this on a GC and a handful of related 1 day courses. I want to progress my career in safety though Diploma or NVQ routes but keep getting knocked back, even after offering to pay for them myself. The question is, is there a way outside of work that i can get a Level 6 qualification, Should I shut up because I like the job that I Im doing or shall I look for a company that will offer me the opportunity to progress ???

Posted By Phil H I had the same problem some years ago. I funded the Diploma myself attending night school. It is worth doing if you can afford it as it gives you a stronger position should you want to apply for jobs within H+S ,or develop in your current job.You can also do most courses on line and use your present work place as examples when doing assignments etc. However I think face to face learning is invaluable because you get experience from lecturers and peers.Think about the Nebosh Certificates as a starter. They are recognised and will be sufficient for your present role and are cheaper than the diploma. If however you want to go full time safety practitioner you should aim for the Nebosh diploma or similar. What about specialising - Nebosh Environmental diploma. In a nutshell you can do it outside work. Phil

Posted By lizzie harvey Have a look at Individual Learning Accounts (I got £200 towards the NEBOSH Cert fees) and Career Development Loans for the Dip. I'm studying the Cert just now (distance learning, due to shift work etc). I'm determined to progress as well, but self funding is the only way for me to do so these days :-( Good luck Martin!! Posted By AMelrose Martin You could try the distance learning PG Certificate at Strathclyde Universtity. It's hard work and involves writing lots and lots of 500 word mini-essays (plus a few larger ones). Once you pass you can go on to do the Diploma which is again done by distance learning. You are assigned a tutor who will offer advice and mark your essays throughout. It does take commitment though as over Christmas and Easter when everyone else is enjoying themselves, you'll be stuck by the computer typing away!! You could try creating a business plan for completing the course e.g. how it would help the organisation you work for and ask if they would consider part funding (or allowing you a day per week for example to study). If you can create a watertight plan then you might get some help [the company I last worked for contributed something to the course and allowed me some time to study per week - though this gradually disappeared as the course progressed!]. Good luck.

Posted By Glyn Atkinson Martin, if you are good at what you do, and it reads that you are, then is it perhaps your firm being afraid to lose you if you go on to a higher level of safety knowledge and qualification? Is it worth asking at an annual appraisal or a request for a management interview? Is your request just motivated by a thirst for knowledge, or are you looking for a safety full time recognised role, with renumeration to suit new qualification? If you tell your firm what you are seeking out of your present employment, perhaps there may be a way ?

Posted By Martin Jones Thanks for all the advice I think with the company having the lowest accident rate in its history and an award winning safety management system in place, It is hard to justify the cost and time off to send me on a diploma course when we are struggling in other areas of the business. Why pay for something they are already getting. With the working knowledge and experience that I have gained doing the job it would be nice to test myself by doing the diploma and then getting the reconition. I don't fancy the distance learning myself, but the night shcool sounds good. Dose anyone Know where I can do the nebosh deploma at night shcool in cheshire ??. ( I could stay on after the course cleaning to help fund the course )

Posted By rjhills If you love your job, and are winning awards for your company, even if you get the chance to change to a firm which lets you go for the IOSH diploma, you have to evaluate whether you would be any better off. If you are winning awards, you must be doing something right. Suggest you set up a directors seminar on THEIR responsibilities if you want them to have any idea of what H&S involves. Recognition could well follow.

Posted By Zoe Smith I agree your company sound scared of losing you or having to give you a pay rise once passed! I would speak to them and ask if they will help fund this providing once you pass you sign a clause to say you will stay with the company for 12 months after or if not you have to reimbure them for the cost. If they wont agree to that then i would fund it yourself(they cant stop you doing this)and move on once you have passed. Good luck
