Posted By Paul Hello everyone, I have been, for some time now, looking into training to become an advisor of health and safety and fire safety within educational buildings. Having worked as a school Premises manager for several years now this has become an area that I have become very interested in and would love to advise schools about. I am currently searching the net for available courses and what quallifications I would need to either join a company that speciallises in this field or going solo. So far I have not found a full list of minimum quallifications I would need to fill this type of position. I am very keen to get started on this so if anyone could help with this it would be appreciated, or good websites that would be worth looking at. Thank you in advance.

Posted By Paul Thanks for the response, I have been checking the different websites with these courses available and have to admit find them a little expensive. The E-learning courses are cheaper and I will probably go for these type of courses. This type of course will fit in with my current work time-table and I should be able to start straight away.

Posted By David Bannister Paul, competence is a subject that has been very thoroughly discussed in many previous threads. You may wish to do a search using the search forums link to the right and review your decision. Good luck.

Posted By PhilP Paul The other thing would be speak to your Local Authority H&S Section and find out the qualifications of their Safety Officers, the council must have safety advisers to cover this field (I should know I am one). Within my office qualifications range from NGC to NVQ4 and even a Diploma in Environmental Health. Everyone advises schools on the multitude of issues they have. But you will certainly need your NGC as a minimum. If the LA has a position free and with your experience they may even pay for any training. It's worth a try. Phil

Posted By Paul Thank you for your advice. I will definitely look into this (I won't get my hopes up) at least it will give me some valuable knowledge within the field I'm looking at. Thanks again.
