Posted By Joanna I've been working in retail management for the past few years and have had to deal with basic health and safety matters in my branch including training of new staff. From speaking to a friend about being fed up of my job and not knowing what to do he suggested that I look into specialising in health and safety and expanding my basic knowledge by doing my NEBOSH. I have found various courses to do, but my problem is what I'll do after and how to get into to it? I don't want to work in construction which seems to be where all the jobs are and how do I get into a job without any experience? The course I'm looking at doing is about 2k which is a lot of money (for me) to pay out when I'm unsure where it will lead me, is it a good idea to pursue this?

Posted By willhiem maybe have a look and see with some local consultancies to see if you could shadow someone for a day or two see what it entails. then you could decide whether its worth forkin out for the diploma, you might be able to get another training course while still be involved in the retail side of things, gradually becoming more focused on the health and safety side of things, if you work for a large chain you could see have they a health and safety department and try and perhaps see what they do. most people tend to get into safety for where they have previously worked as experience of the workplace is a vital part, after people feel comfortably proficient in that workplace they tend to branch out. If you dont want to get into construction it may be work looking at some training in quality and environmental also as that would help with h & s in getting into manufacturing / pharmacuetical workplaces. bit of a ramble really, i only meant to write a few lines. hope i was of some help
