Posted By PW74 Anyone got any info / experience on working in Hong Kong? I'm a H&S professional with 12 years experience in construction, rail, nuclear etc. Got NEBOSH as well. I've had a look on the internet and many jobs requure RSO (Registered Safety Officer) with the Labour Dept. Also require fluent Mandarin/Chinese which I don't speak (therefore am I wasting my time?) Wondered if anyone had any info / experience of working over there, including rates / salary etc Phil

Posted By Anthony Hill Greetings PW74. I worked in Hong Kong for 7 years and I gained RSO status in 1992. The rules for achieving RSO are quite straight forward and transparent. However there are very few "Gwielos" who have been able to register. The qualification is a must if you want to be properly integrated into the local HK safety fraternity who, by the way, are generally excellent practitioners. These days there are much fewer opportunities for Expats in the HK safety field as many local HK safety guys learned the practical application and enforcement skills during the ACP days and have continued to hone their skills to a high level. Keep in mind also that whilst much of the safety legislation is available in English, the language of legislation now is quite rightly Chinese following the handover in 1997. May I recommend that you contact the HK IOSH branch where you are sure to get a full and proper response. Hope this helps, Respect, Tony Hill.

Posted By Chris Jerman Hi, I worked out there recently for 3 months with the Hong Kong Police Force setting up their H&S management systems. I still have a contact out there who may be able to help as he is their chief safety chappy. If you have list of questions, I could ping them to him for you. I dealt with IOSH out there too and found that they weren't quite as 'in touch' as I though they would be Chris Jerman
