career change to Biological / Radiation officer

I am actively considering a change from a scientific research career to being a biological and radiation officer at a UK university. Has anyone experience of a similar switch? What opportunities will their be outside of the university sector with 5 to 7 years experience?

Nicholas,
I am aware of a number of safety officers in the HE Sector who have made the switch that you are contemplating.
There are jobs coming up all the time in the HE Sector, government agencies and research companies. I am not sure what opportunities there are outside that area
If you want to specialise in radiation protection you do need to think about getting Certification as a RPA have a look at http://www.srp-uk.org/rpa2000/index.html
There is also a move afoot to certify biological safety officers.
Have you spoken to you own University Safety Officer at Reading?

define what you mean re radiation as an RPA is not easily achievable without the proper PHD as its not one of the give away degrees etc!

Hi Bob,
I have a PhD in biological science and 11 years experience using open radioactive sources. RPA is not my immediate goal as that role is supplied by an external contractor at the university in question. Sufficient knowledge to liaise, understand and apply recommendations is required. Do you think working towards RPA qualification is a good idea? It is something I am investigating but would value your assessment of its merit.
