I have been asked by me employer to consider a move to Dubai, the job is by no means a done deal yet but I am hopeful. Is there anyone who can advise on the practicalities of living there are such as rental rates, moving of money back to the UK, areas to avoid and anything else that impacts on daily life. I could approach colleagues already there but have been told that could be tantamount to canvassing which is forbidden.
Any info will help

Hi Chris,
I actually live and work in Abu Dhabi, but have a lot do with Dubai.
There are plenty of great things about working in the UAE - exciting projects, big money, tax free - etc.
But the main focus of everybody here at the moment is accomodation availability and cost.
In Dubai availability is not as big a problem as Abu Dhabi but the cost are high - and getter higher. Be very careful and do your research on the cost and type of accomodation that you can expect to get for your budget.
The general cost of living is getting higher here (real inflation of 10% - 30%. Food, cars, schooling / daycare, etc.
I am not saying don not come, and I am not saying you can not make / save some money but it is not as good as it can sound from the outside in relation to money.

take it from someone who has just got back from a very brief period over there...and got severly bitten on the backside...
Get everything you discuss and any offers dicussed in conversation by phone in Writing...check and double check everything...holidays, pay, role, job title,housing allowance, vehicle provision and the dates they will be provided as the last thing you want is to be "temporarily" stuck in the middle of the desert, sharing with other guys and with no transport to civilisation (there speaks the voice of experience)..raise everything you can think off with the employer and do not be rushed into leaving a good job (as i was) on vague information and hearsay....
And just to warn you (as i wasnt till too late) that there are different legal liabilites out there compared to UK, as in if theres a serious accident on site, the safety person will be arrested as a matter of course and say goodbye to your passport for a while...
but apart from that the lifestyle is great (apart form the heat in the summer)..mail me if you require further info

I have been in Qatar for a couple of months, and it is going well. The opinion of long termers here is that it better than Dubai for young families and the schools are better. They are about 5yrs behind the development of Dubai and there is plenty of work. If you need any more info' drop me a line.
