Posted By Davey Hello, I am considering a career change in to health and safety. I have 10 years of working experience in the offshore oil & gas industry, both abroad and in the UK north sea where I am currently. I am an IRATA level 3 rope access supervisor and trainer and initially worked offshore as a rigger and then branched into NDT inspection and assurance. So I am experienced and qualified in rigging & lifting operations (including LOLER assessments) and non-destructive testing and inspection. Can someone advise me on the career path that may be open to me in offshore health and safety? Also any info on the average payscales as a safety tech or safety advisor both in the North sea and abroad would be very beneficial to help me decide if it is a financially viable option. Thanks Davey

Posted By naveen duggal Hi,It is good to plan out your career change, esp in the Health & Safety area. First of all, you have to consider your location of next job i.e.do you prefer On-shore or Off-shore job? Then, how about doing a few HSE short term Rospa, IOSH or Nebosh certificate or British Safety council courses.Retrain or attend or gain the H&S experience with a reputable organisation or Industry, with good pay package. Need to work in H&S field for some time and develop further eventhough, you can easily fit in H&S job. Wish you best of luck! Naveen

Posted By Wayne Hewitt Hi Davey Another option would be to get elected as an offshore safety Rep while you are working offshore, The reps training would give you an insight into offshore safety and you would be mixing with the right people. Regards Wayne

Posted By Davey Yeah, I'm looking at doing the NEBOSH ngc. Unfortunately I can't become a safety rep as I am never on the same installation for more than 2 trips in a row. I'm really interested in the average payscales that are current in the offshore industry if anyone can help? Cheers Davey

Posted By Ron Johnston Davey, I just completed my NEBOSH gen cert course in Aberdeen - though waiting for exam results. On my course was a guy who was a qualified offshore scaffolder with many years experience who was moving into HSE similar to yourself. Luckily for you guys you have oil industry experience -which is what I'm lacking trying to get into HSE in Aberdeen and it's hampering me badly so far. On another note, my son is a qualified welder with most of the codings and he's trying to get into rope access for offshore work. Do you have any suggestions as to where he can find a company to put him through his training? you can email me at roninhocarioca@talktalk.net Good luck with your 'new' career search. Regards Ron

Posted By A Campbell Always regarded the offshore industry as a 'niche' market. Once you are accepted and gained some experience work via agencies etc is consistent... so long as you don't upset the OIM! Good Luck Tony
