Health and Safety positions abroad...

Dear all
This forum seems to be quite popular with Health and Safety professionals seeking advice on how to gain employment and opportunities overseas.
I was wondering if those lucky enough to be already working abroad could possibly share their experiences on how they found employment in the countries they are now working in to give direction and hope to those that are still looking.
I have come to realise that seeking employment overseas is a lengthy process and it can seem quite frustrating when nothing seems to happens.
Between us we have a wealth of experience that would be valuable to share - I know that the SHP online has general job vacancies but would a site with more focus on jobs abroad be useful for members - offering advice as well as vacancies
I look forward to hearing your thoughts
Kind regards
Jane Lowe

I haven't made the leap myself yet, but have often considered it, although I have worked abroad quite a lot on visits.
The best route in my opinion is to get an overseas assignment from a company in the UK. Not only is this financially often the best but it is easier to come back if you find that it is not for you. Try contacting UK consultancies with offices abroad or the large multi nationals - Oil companies are often looking for people to work overseas.
If you're certain that it is for you, and you know where you want to work then the best advice is to go there and set up meetings with target companies & recruitment agents. A lot of useful info can be obtained from universities that offer qualifications in the subject. You may also need/benefit from a course to update your knowledge of the local legislation etc.
Try to go when the local weather is at its worst so you don't get an unduly rosy illusion of the country. Also use the time to look at accommodation costs.
Trying to fix up everything over the internet just doesn't give you the whole picture in my experience.

I too was really keen to work abroad so i made contact with several agencies and eventually found a position in Dubai working for a local company. The Safety Manager was from UK and the package offered was initially very good. After much deliberation i decided to resign form my current position and give it a go.
At first all seemed to be as offered, however then all the hidden agendas started to appear i.e. My passport was confiscated for what was explained to me as Visa purposes. This in fact was true. What was not explained was the fact that the passport is kept by the company in order to keep you in Dubai should you have a fatality on your site. If this happens and it comes to case (court)then you as a safety manager would be kept in Dubai until the matter had been resolved.
A two month bonus was offered which was to be paid in January, however this would in fact not be paid till the April (start of UK financial year). It appears that all they wanted was to keep me locked into a contract. Holiday pay was also kept back till the September as were payments for flights. So in you have to pay for this out of your own pocket initially.
My advice to anyone wishing to work abroad would be to really ask for a detailed contract. Also if you decide to work in the UAE then forget everything you have learnt back in the UK because this is how you will soon feel.
