I have recently passed the NEBOSH General Certificate but I am struggling to find suitable opportunities due to my lack of experience. Many of the job descriptions I read all ask for relevant experience or they are graduate courses.
I currently work in an office environment and I am responsible for completing Risk, DSE, Fire and Manual Handling Assessments.
I live in Norwich but I am prepared to travel around Anglia.
Does anyone have any advice or help they can offer me?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart
Well done for passing your general certificate. You know have to think where you want to go with your career as, 'health and safety' is a diverse industry. You have taken the first step by passing the general, however, by passing the general certificate you have just opened the door, as the general is a good, foundation course. I would recommend you work your way up the Nebosh ladder, and find an area that tickles your fancy! Hope this helps...
Bryn.

Bryn
I like Stuart have just passed my Nebosh and would like to progress, however when you say "work your way up the Nebosh ladder" what does that mean, go to Diploma level? or what would you recommend.
Thanks

Please don’t be beaten before you start, you now hold a NEBOSH Certificate (well done!), this is a valued qualification. You also have experience in various areas of safety (fire, general risk, DSE, Man Hand), this is solid grounding.
You should start to apply for suitable posts, even go for the ones which you feel are a little out of you league (within reason), you might be surprised by the result. If you don’t get taken on straight away you will still gain experience of interview processes for heath and safety posts.
Quite a while ago I set my sights on a career in health and safety, I put myself through the certificate and nosed my way into the union in my workplace as a safety rep, this made me appreciate that qualifications and experience together are essential and allowed me to sell myself to potential employers.
I agree with Bryn to a certain extent, you should always seek to build your knowledge and qualifications, never stop with this. But! NEBOSH is not the only way forward (of course it is a really good route). There are loads of routes you can take – further NEBOSH Modules (fire & construction) NVQ4, NEBOSH Diploma (with post nominal’s no less!!), Degree, certification in specialist area etc….. The world, as they say is your oyster, but you must push yourself to get what you want.
I got my first break by being pushy, persistent and annoying (no change there I here you say). But once you get a foot in the door you won’t look back; provided you apply yourself – know one can do it for you.
Personally I feel that I still have a hell of a lot to learn in safety, but I am currently self employed and my biggest client is an organisation with 5000 employees. Please don’t think I am blowing my own trumpet here – the point I am trying to make is that if I can do it, you (and Brodie) can definitely do it!
