Posted By john mc hi, just got a bit of an issue at the moment, wondering if I could sound people out a bit if that’s OK? I’m currently working in a design office, glad to have a job these days, I was laid off last Christmas from on sites and have since taken up this role acting as CDM coordinator. Having been here now over 10 months and having been initially told it would take a while to settle in I realise now that my role is purely a money making one, despite my best efforts the whole area is largely ignored beyond the minimum requirements. I have tried various talks and training sessions and spoken to various people in charge with the usual response of ‘we’ll get it sorted at the next management meeting’. At the moment its got to the stage where contracts aren't being signed and fees not agreed from my portion of the works (since they have this in house they don’t need outside consultants so they get the fee now). I have suggested I look after the contracts and getting them signed but the management want to look after this so its out of my hands yet we’re doing work without having anything signed. At the moment I am utterly depressed, and have been looking at other opportunities and while the whole idea of my current job appeals to me I think I was sold a bit of a giant porky at the start! There doesn’t seem to be much reply to my job applications and I hate recruiters. I have tried numerous things to try and just help solve the situation but nothing gets done and there is a major lack of understanding of the whole area, I reckon I will jack it all in when the right job, any job shows up (I’m also getting paid sfa, I’ve checked industry salary figures and i'm below minimum for the role so then i've gotten money issues as well with banks on my back etc). I’m not usually one to give in easily or whine but I think there wont be a major change in attitude unless there is a prosecution or something close to home, I’m just at a loss as to what I can do to change things (tried case law etc etc). any suggestions? Should I call the directors and management and lay it all on the line, my gentle probings and emails haven't worked, and what do I say when I do so? Or offers (though actually don’t post them because I’d prefer the advice over the offers and the thread getting pulled, thanks!!)

Posted By Peter Reynolds I know the feeling all too well John, I was lured by promises and pie-crust, the premise of me taking the job in the first place was that my salary (below the industry minimum for a H & S manager at the outset) would be reviewed after 6 months, only to be told after that time I was having my hours reduced down to a two day week. And to compound this, my role has widened to encompass Human Resources, Facilities Management, Wastes management, Ethical Trading Standards etc, all for the same measly wage It seems that the company is totally production orientated and H & S seems to be an unnecessary evil'. Although I must point out that the company is compliant as far as statutory duties are concerned. I have to fight tooth and nail to get anything done if it's not essential to the daily running of the factory. Anybody else on the first rung of the H & S ladder, be warned, don't make the same mistake as I did. Needless to say I have been looking elsewhere for work, but for now the nightmare goes on
