Hello all, I am a Health and Safety Officer for the Police force and have been for the passed 12 months, and I have a facilities management background of 4 years.
I recently passed my NEBOSH nat cert, sat an IOSH managing safely in the Policing services and I am next looking to sit the NVQ level 4.
What sort of salary can I expect to get if I decide to move on in to the private sector with my experience I have so far (with only the nat cert and IOSH under my belt)
Please advise....
Cheers

In the past there have been some horrifyingly low salary expectation answers posted to questions of the same ilk.
For a person with the cert, my opinion would be up to £30k, but depends on the size of the company, the sector it's in (and the job title).

Sorry!
From memory, some people were suggesting £12k - £15k, which I found disturbing (& luckily something I haven't experienced).

that is shocking!!
Ive heard some companies give you a car allowance for H&S advisors/officers- is this common in big companies?

You work for less than £20k.... WOW
I started on £19k, in my first h&s position back in 1996 (general h&s consultancy)
As per my previous posts, why do people work for the Public Sector/LA's is beyond me.
Work is not done for charity.
I consider myself to be very lucky to have a salary well in excess of the industry standard - O & G recommended.
Get the job applications out asap.

Forgot to add, only had the Gen Cert back in 1996.
Also had company car + the £19k. So guess salary was more equivalent to £23k or so.
Still amazed - less than £20k in 2008.....tut, tut
Salaries won't go up, until people refuse to work for such low salaries.
Probably get more money for doing just about anything else.

You won't know if you can get something better unless you try.
I know what I would do, ASAP!!

Whether you'd get something with less than a years experience depends on you and what you can offer the company you apply to.
I went for a new role after less than a year, got the job and a £5k pay rise for my trouble, so it is possible. Didn't get a car with that one though - depends on the company and whether they require you to travel.
If I were you I'd start looking around for a new job. Apply for the ones that take your eye (within reason), and don't let requests for certain qualifications stop you applying (half the time they don't even know what they are asking for!).

This time of year isnt the best time to get something else though is it?, especially with the credit crunch!!

Depends on what industry you are chasing.
Applying costs nothing - you don't have to take a job just because it's offered to you.

It depends part of country you want to work in also the business sector.
Normally people with certificate get approx £20K (not in London though)
I would advise you not to reject any suitable offer even with less money provided that the company you join gives you better career prospects.
I totally disagree with £30k suggestions. There's lots of Gradute Iosh memebers lurking around for jobs now a days with no sucess even at £25000.

I work in the construction industry. second job in 6 months(made redundant from the last one), I'm now working for an agency and take home on average £1200 a week. The only down side is i have to work away from home and my average hours are 78 per week. month on 3 days off.

Having never looked in the job section in the SHP I couldn't tell you why, I'm only going on what I've been offered personally.
As with every job, in every walk of life, it depends on you and what you can offer.
And what a company is willing to pay.
I have turned down several jobs after being offered it because the package wasn't right for me/ what I wanted.
I've also applied (and got) jobs that asked for higher qualifications than I possess.
Like I say, it all depends.

Think you have answered your own question with your last post.
nat cert - £25 to £28k
Just be more ruthless/mercenary in your outlook.
Your work for your own benefit and your family etc,(if you have one)
Don't work for peanuts/charity.
GO FOR IT ASAP.
Recession or not, it costs you little to apply for a new job. At least you do have some experience to call on when applying for new jopbs.
Just look at the endless posts on this site of new people who want to get into h&s with no experience. At least you are ahead of them.
What's the worst that can happen? You get turned down.... so what, keep applying.

Hi bigal01
Here is my opinion on what you should do :
a)Stay with your current organisation and get the NEBOSH Cert and Preferably the diploma, getting to at least Grad Iosh status. If you have have to self fund the diploma - do it distance learning whilst at the same time you are gaining good h & s experience. Overall it might take about two years ( depending on how you do the diploma ).
b) Once you have got the cert and diploma you will have a good deal more experience in rail h & s and thus a better position to get a better paid job.
What others are saying about jumping at the first job offer as it offers better money etc in my opinion can be flawed- sometimes the grass is not greener in the other side. I was faced with the same situation as yourself, but I decided to be patient, get everything that I needed to take my career to the next step ( nebosh diploma / chartered membership / training quals / etc, and I am now in a reasonably paid h & s position.
If I was you, I would hold fire right now until you get the basics, and then you will be ready to move on when something suitable turns up.
At the end of the day there is a credit crunch right now, and it is affecting many industry sectors, thus creating intense competition for h & s jobs - you could find it difficult to get in somewhere.

Think you have answered the wrong thread.
bigal already has the gen cert (he says so in his very first post)
Neither does he work in the rail industry, he works for the police
On such a low salary how is he supposed to pay for the ridiculous fees wanted for the diploma. Along with no doubt reduced public spending thanks to Mr Darling, I bet his employer won't be keen to fund it.
Get a beter paid job, then you can fund the extra training and you don't owe the your employer anything.

Hi Guderian
I was looking at the wrong thread, however it possible to self fund the nebosh diploma or get a career loan from somewhere. Nebosh dip costs about 2.5 K.
In my experience you will get nowhere without minimum level 6 quals and a couple of years experience as competition from more highly qualified persons is always there when one is job hunting, due to the scarcity of h & s positions and that potential employers have a choice of candidates all wanting the same job. As I said earlier distance learning is a cheaper option, but well worthwhile in the end.
I would stay get as much experience as I can, get qualified and then move when one is in a much stronger position in my opinion.

Exactly - Dip is far too expensive.
Try Open University course T835 Integrated Safety & Environmental Management, about £750. Also considered to be post graduate level of academic study.
The NEBOSH Dip is not the 'be all and end all' of H&S training.
There is more than one way to skin the cat to get qualified.
Obviously I'm biased, as I did the course a few years back, but got me the qualifications and IOSH membership level I needed, leading to better paid jobs
And now the job with a half decent salary - although acknowledge this is partly as a result of the industry I work in.

I would still do the NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 4 rather than other forms education - everything one needs to know is in the nebosh diploma or one could prove their competence via the NVQ Level 4. Its what most employers look for unfortunately in the uk and abroad. Most people can get a loan or pay in installments over the tuition period if you have to self fund as with some training providers.

Never had a problem with recognition of OU qualifications - its a well known UK organisation.
They also offer a student loan/finance assistance option.
Why pay more??
NEBOSH = greatly over rated in my opinion.

Hi
I have recently decided to move jobs and in my opinion you need to take on board many factors.
1)salary
2)Car or allowance
3)Pension
4)Health care
5)Bonus
And just as important
1)The company
2)What your role will be
3)Further training
4)Prospects
So in my opinion its not all down wages its about the whole package
Regards
Ps. Would not do it for 20k mind he he
PPS. NVQ4 can be completed for £800 at college

After completing NGC & NCC in December 07 & Jan 08 Respectively. I continued working as a contracting scaffolder applying for H&S jobs mainly via job sites online. In June I got an interview with a major mechanical company and to my surprise got offered the position as H&S Trainee starting on £28,000 salary, upon successfully completing my 3 month probationary period, I am about to lose the trainee tag and get a pay rise (substantial I Hope) so for all you disillusioned people out there keep applying and Hopefully something good will come of all your worth while efforts.
The training I am receiving (IOSH Managing Safely. First Aid At Work, Scaffolding Inspection, Managing Radiation, Far out weigh the salary factor. Stick in and keep applying there are good companies and positions for people with out the Nebosh Diploma

NEBOSH certificate and IOSH Managing Safety I'd say £18K to £23K.
As for people saying they see jobs advertised for NEBOSH certificate at £28K remember certificate is the minimum qualification not the maximum.
Expect diploma holders to be applying and getting these jobs.

In response to the last post ITK, I must have been lucky getting the 28k post with only a NGC, NCC cant have been any Diploma holders interested eh? I bet they wish they had, the 5k a year pay rise starts in Jan 09. He with NGC who dares apply sometimes wins. Happy days

When I applied for tmy post, it wasn't all qualifications that nailed the deal. I was up against people who had diploma's Lvl 4, but I still prevailed. At the end of the day if you go to an interview you need to sell yourself, and don't think, oh I only got this. Companies look at ability, interpersonal skills, IT skills, maybe ability to train. You may have a diploma but if your a MR Bean with no personality, no aspirations, no get up and go, would they employ him or someone who is as keen as mustard, wants to do the job and willing to learn. 27k first job in H&S with only NCC, but do have trade site background.
Good Luck Fella
