Hi Guys

I am in a dilemma at moment. Is it possible to get your foot in the health and safety industry without experience? The fact of the matter is most of the jobs advertised on the shp websites are looking for experienced, highly qualified, competent individuals. The fact of the matter is, you have to have experience to be competent in the health and safety industry. So how can you gain that competency if you have no experience?
Any chance for we the new starters? If there is where do we start from to get our foot in the door.

Thanks

Hi,
I was a starter (with no experience) and I found my first job using this forum / university friends who had studied in H&S the key is to keep at it and not give up, speaking to others in the industry will help you build a network and this will be highly resourceful. We all know times are tuff at the moment but there will be an opportunity that will arrive as long as you keep your self on the frontline.

The very best of luck!

Interesting question MM,

The main point to remember is we all started somewhere.
Voluntary work is a good way in sometimes.

As Reg 7 of the Management Regs states that any H&S bod has to be competent, then you're probably looking at assisting to begin with to build your experiance.

Also look for roles in your current job. Maybe get onto the Safety Committee or see who does your risk assessments and ask if you can help next time they are reviewed.

Hope this helps.

I think most people suffer from the 'lack of experience' thingy. All wondering how to get experience when no-one seems willing to take a chance with us. I sit unit A on the 20th of this month and hope for a good change in fortune. Being unemployed for nearly 3 years is very depressing ( I lost my construction job due to a spinal degeneration condition). With me being a site safety rep. I decided to sit the NGC in 2007 in the hope that the qualification coupled with nearly 9 years construction experience plus the 4 years H&S 'experoence' I had would stand me in good stead. Unfortunately it hasn't so far although through the other course candidates I am now beginning to get a good network of people. Hopefully something may come good through that.
It is hard to get employment in H&S but stick at it, keep searching and you never know.
Best of luck.

Maxmillan,

Welcome aboard!
You intended to join the safety field, also joined the forum. To me, you are already one of us, 'a safety geek'.

In regards to job, everyone of us started somewhere, you will also be manage to hold a corner as well. However, you need to have some sort of qualifications such as NEBOSH certificate for steping in the saftey field (if you don't hold it already).

You can get some volutry work, go for a 'co-oridinator/assistant' jobs,

All the best.

MM,

Don't give up, i found my first position through this forum and a HS manager who was willing to give me a chance. A short contract role to start with then managed to get a permanent job within manufacturing. Now contracting again. Make sure you come across positively on your Cv and if you get an interview concentrate on what you can do not what you can't. The things you know nothing about you can learn about quickly.

good luck and don't give up

Simo

If I get a Nebosh Level 3 qualification, is that enough essentially to get a job in H&S? I previously was working as a H&S Administrator, for a major FM company, so gained some knowledge through that way however those types of jobs are few and far between so am thinking of getting Nebosh Level 3 which looks like its gonna cost me £2k odd. Any thoughts?

I have managed to make some very useful contacts from the forum and have received a lot of work after putting my details on the career forum.

Why not add your details with a little more information and that will give others a chamce to contact you.

I started as a H&S representative and then requested the company to support me in gaining my NEBOSH certificate once I had gained that, I again approached the company to fund my NVQ4 which they also agreed to do. If you are employed by a company that values H&S and you show a keenness in the role then any company who cares about H&S will support you. Keep banging on the door and it will open. Good luck

Along with all other advice you take on board keep posting your availability on here - I can assure you perspective employers do keep an eye on the forum, it’s the keenness and attitude they want. If you have this they'll put you through the qualifications and ensure you get the right experience you need.

It’s a really bad time to be seeking employment and that’s not just in safety - we have all seen the news and such. Many safety people with all the qualifications and masses of experience are currently looking for work.

I would have to say that new starter positions are near non existent in the current climate. Please somebody tell me I'm wrong?

Just weather the storm, I know that’s not easy, keep trying and the opportunity will come along.

For what its worth I'll tell you a true tale - I read / bourse these forums just about every day and there was a young girl with a cert and no experience who constantly posted on here just asking for a chance to prove herself. It really impressed me and I thought if I ever need anyone! I did and she has now been working for me for 6 months and she's doing a great job.

Max,

If all else fails try and join the HSE! The don't require previous H&S experience. They try and make you competent. Unfortunately 'try' is the operative word.

Keep an eye of their website for recruiting campaigns - they don't need to advertise.

All the best,

Tony.

Yes if you are very fortunate. 2k is expensive for the NGC or similar - try your local college for a figure nearer £850.

Experience is of course legion; but I know the 'chicken & the egg' arguement and it is is a tough call.

There are some fantastic deals out there currently for the cert - if you live in Northhants you can get a 50% training grant for smaller businesses. I have just put two people on:

1 in Derby 800 and one in Newcastle 595.

www.hsepeople.com is the first website of its kind. A Social Networking site aimed specifically at Health and Safety People in all industries world wide. In Health and Safety the sharing of Information, Lessons Learned and best practise is very important. [reference removed] brings everything safety together in one place and makes it very easy to communicate with other HSE Professionals, Agencies, Companies, Suppliers, Trainers and Consultants.

Only 2 months old but with almost 1000 members and more joining every day, [reference removed] is a not for profit community site that aims to be a one stop shop for anyone working in HSE. On [reference removed] you can create a profile freely advertising your services and availability, Chat instantly with other members through the sites instant messenger or through the discussion forums. With hundreds of HSE jobs being listed from around the world on the RSS Feeds or from the many big agencies posting on the forums [reference removed] has more HSE Jobs than any other site on the Net.

Create a blog and let other keep up to date with what you are doing. If it is of interest to the community post it to the site magazine. [reference removed] also gives members the ability to create and manage their own group specific to whatever topic they choose and many agencies are taking advantage of this feature to create jobs groups.

If you are a HSE Trainer create an event and advertise course places. People can join your event and leave comments or ask questions. They can also view who else is attending your event and communicate with them.

The business directory page is now live and we will constantly be adding to it. If you work, recruit, train or consult in Health and Safety then your business can benefit by being on display to hundreds of the [reference removed] who are likely to use your services.

[reference removed] also allows members to upload safety videos and you can now download all the videos using the new Micro Feed option and watch them offline. Great for training purposes!

In the very near future we will be launching the document library. This will give any member the ability to upload, search, browse and download Safety Presentations, Procedures, Lessons Learned, Risk Assessments, Checklists, Toolbox talks. In fact any document relating to safety. No longer will you need to re-invent the wheel every time a new challenge presents itself. The chances are some one before you will have done it and you will be able to find it on www.hsepeople.com

The site is proving a huge hit and I hope to welcome you there soon
