Posted By neil136 Hello everyone. I am new to this site. I am currently a full time Firefighter and considering a career in H&S when I retire. As I will be financing NEBOSH qualifications myself, I want to make sure I have the possibility of finding a job at the end of it. I will be grateful for any comments Neil

Posted By Allan Curran If I were you I'd consider starting with the General Certificate, progress to the diploma and squeeze in a teaching course somewhere. You do see jobs for fire risk assessors/fire safety advisers etc and with your background you should captilise on that. The teaching simply adds another string to your bow as you often get tutors on fire courses who are ex fire fighters, so again, capitilise on your experience.

Posted By Graham Smith Neil, I was in a similar situation to yourself. Retired from being a fulltime fire fighter a few years ago.I funded the General Certificate myself. Got a post with the Police Authority who funded me to do Nebosh Fire & Risk Management and then NVQ 4 OHSP. I have since gained a further promotion within same organisation. Your background will stand you in good stead. Go for it. Good Luck

Posted By graeme12345 Neil, you could take the NEBOSH/IOSH Gen Cert and Const Cert without any course to attend, you just contact the examination centre and pay for the exam and marking. Used to be about £100 each, I could not afford the courses so did my own studying, paid for both exams and marking. At least you will know what you are in for if you fail, and you will not have spent thousands. Read (i know it's a lot of legal jargon, but it is important) all legislation and ACOP's + HSE info for the industry you want to work in. get info from NEBOSH on what the examiners look for in answers ans for marking paspers, e.g. if they state list "whatever" make sure you just "list", not explain in detail. Study the way companies / individuals become liable, understand the law of tort (basically, negligence +)and know the english legal system and it's components Good Luck
